There’s a new person in charge in the town of North Hempstead. Just the other day Linda Stein Brickman was assigned as the acting commissioner of the troubled Department of Building, Safety and Enforcement.
Ms. Brickman, an eight-year employee in the Planning Department will fill the position immediately and will hold the position temporarily until a permanent commissioner and a deputy are hired.
According to officials, Ms. Brickman’s assignment to serve as head of the abandoned department came just two weeks after commissioner Matthew Miner resigned, only six months into his tenure. Also, earlier this year, former commissioner David Wasserman also resigned, as well as did deputy commissioner Joseph Madden.
In fact, it is noted that the building departments has been the subject of a continuing investigation by the Nassau district attorney for financial mismanagement.
The investigation is said to have begun in May, spurred by a probe by the town leading to blocked access to department computers, the reassignment of employees and the cessation of construction on the various partially constructed homes in the town.
Prior to joining North Hempstead town, Mrs. Brickman served as a project director with the New York City Department of Design and Construction. And, prior to that, she worked in the New York City Department of Housing Prevention and Development.
