If you think Santa was happy, jolly, generous sole, then you haven’t heard of Raymond Mohler Jr of Long Island. This young boy, who was hospitalized with a rare hip condition known as Legg –Calve-Perthes disease which affect part of the femur to die and affects 1 in 1,200 children, is out and about spreading holiday cheer.
The young man left the hospital with a leg brace which landed him in the hospital at various points and due to his gratefulness to be home for the holidays and his Christmas Ever birthday, made it his holiday “project” to donate a portion of his gifts to other children still in the hospital.
According to Raymond’s dad, he had nothing to play with, while in the hospital and feels that some if he had, it would have made his visit much easier and less “stressful” and scary. And, that’s what he’s trying to give to other children.
The youngster, now 8, recently went back to South Nassau Communities Hoppital’s Family Medicine Center and showered about a dozen children from four underprivileged families with large bags filled with beautifully wrapped gifts. The children were chosen by the hospital and Raymond has been doing this each year, starting back in 2003.
Raymond, was sporting a red polo shirt and handed out candy canes and presents including skateboards, trucks, and stuffed animals. And, he remained humble about his generosity and contribution.
Yet, his contributions are exciting professionals to redefine health care that includes more than just providing coverage and taking care of the sick, but also fostering their recovery and boosting their spirits.
Also, in September 2005, Raymond along with his family founded the Little Saint Nick Foundation, an organization geared toward collecting toys and money to donate during the holidays. And, the operation has grown into a toy-collecting giant, responsible for over $125,000 in toys and donations, and has grown so much, that the boy’s dad has to give up his hobbies to help with the project.
And young Raymond plans to continue going, sporting a Santa hat and handing out more toys Christmas Day.
