I once had a very dear guy friend of mine, who upon graduating college and getting his NYC experience in the entertainment field decided to move off of Long Island and completely out of New York. And, no, he didn’t head for L. A. The place the gent chose to call his home was Washington DC. And, one of the reasons he gave, (back then), was that he just couldn’t find any “attractive” Long Island ladies. Though he has zero trouble meeting women, and had his fair share and pickings of some of the most physically beautiful ladies this side of the GWB, he repeatedly reminded me that their outer beauty was overwhelming, but also overshadowing their limited inner beauty and intelligence. So, off he went to our nation’s capital in search of beautifully brainy girls. And, now it seems that Hollywood is jumping on my friend’s bandwagon. In fact, the new Hollywood hotties all have one thing in common, and that’s their brains.
Shows like Grey’s Anatomy and others of its genre have recruited a “believable” cast of characters who are more “average” than “glamorous” and have turned them into overnight successes and veritable sex symbols, and all because of their subtle “real life” sex appeal of unconventional characteristics such as independence and toughness that’s all the rage of their appeal.
Experts assert that viewers and producers alike are looking for actors with traits rooted in the “real world”. While back in the day, women, even happy homemakers were expected to be more subtly subdued, fragile and feminine (as a sign of beauty), today, both men and women are expected to be self-assure, “aggressive”, worldly, and knowledgably. And, the appeal continues to change as sexiness is shifting from Marilyn Monroe and Carey Grant to sensations such as Scarlet Johansen and Taylor Hicks to name a few. And, with the increasing popularity of intellectually stimulating shows the demand for “atypical” Hollywood types continues to rise. And, professionals point out this, along with commercials such as the one currently released by dove is redefining beauty and encouraging everyone to embrace their own personal attributes and style.
