First there were cigar bars, then there were martini bars, now a new type of “bar” for the sweets enthusiast. That’s right, a chocolate bar.
This avant-garde idea is the brainchild of Israeli restaurateur Max Brenner who already has locations in Israel, Australia, Philippines and Singapore, and is now bringing this sweet sensation to the streets of New York.
This eclectic “eatery” set off Union Square (with a second slated to open in The East Village later this month) boasts decadent delicacies ranging from slices of chocolate pizza to warm double chocolate fondue, all in the ambiance and atmosphere of an elite European café replete with wild and wacky wallpaper and a décor reminiscent of a chocolate factory.
And, because this modern-day Willy Wonka believes that enjoying chocolate should be a memorable indulgence of sweet memories and fun, he has created an entire ritual around the chocolate eating experience to the point of creating his own chocolate culture complete with special cups and utensils.
Hot chocolate is served in oval-shaped cups, called “hug mugs”, each tapered at one end that are cradled in hands. Coffee is offered in “kangaroo cups” featuring a pouch or shelf for chocolate, ice cream Popsicles served with bowls of melted chocolate and chocolate waffle balls with caramelized pecan bits.
