Blue skies and blue water, that’s what we all long for, all year long. And, whether we go tropical or local, the beach is one of our favourite summer outdoor places to be.
But, keeping our oceans and lakes blue, means, say experts, going “green”. Here are a few environmentally-friendly ways to have fun in the sun.
· No souvenirs please: While collecting shells may be tempting, especially since they make great summer accents for your home, and their FREE to boot, but they are costing the environment its intrinsic beauty. Instead, take a picture and use IT to accentuate your home.
· Don’t mark your territory: Make sure you clean up after yourself. While it’s best to toss thing in the trash as you use them, you can always simple store garbage and toss it on your way out or when you get home….After all it’s not likely that YOU would want to go back to your own mess.
· While there’s nothing wrong with bringing your pooch to the beach, you should make sure he or she doesn’t leave behind any unwanted souvenirs. Feces is full of all sorts of bad bacteria that can be washed out to sea and during a dip, into your mouth (uch!!!!); not to mention that is does little for the aesthetic view. Last but not least, keep them out of the water since they may pee in it, not good for YOU or those around you.
· Get your motor running……slowly: The thrill of motor-boating is the speed, but they tend to guzzle lots of fuel and release dangerous gasses into the air and atmosphere. Hit the high seas in a sailboat instead, and try to rely on just the sea breeze, rather than the backup motor, to get you to where you are going…..it can be very relaxing.
