Mom moms and dads (to be) clean up their act, their home, and their lifestyle just after finding out they are expecting or while they are trying to conceive. But, note experts, it’s just as important to keep a clean and green lifestyle well after baby is born.
Here are just a few tips and tricks and how to raise an happy, healthy, eco-friendly baby
· Opt for cloth diapers in lieu of disposables. Remember that we throw away millions of disposable diapers each day, most ending up in landfills and contributing to at least 2 percent of the garbage that will take hundreds of years to decompose. In addition, disposable end up costing about $2,400 during baby’s first two and a half years of life, prior to potty training. And, since washing cloth diapers can result in water waste, also take a toll on the environment, experts suggest investing in biodegradable, phosphatefree detergent.
· Baby clothes that are in good condition can be handed down to other siblings or children “in need”. Or, you can scout out consignment shops or put them up on Craiglist, eBay and Freecycle.
· Pureeing your own baby food is also highly recommended. It’s easier than you may think, it’s healthy, and it’s cost-effective
· Forego formula and nurse instead. This is not only healthier for your baby (and for mom, in many instances), but it can save you $40-plus a week.
· Opt for organic, chemical-free mattresses and bedding. According to some scientists, crib death seems to be liked to flame retardant chemicals which then to become poisonous when they interact with common household fungi.
