While you definitely want to take an interest in all your child/children do, you also want to help them establish a sense of autonomy. That’s why experts recommend that parents promote the idea of “personal passions” or doing things they love, on their own.
In addition to family activities that everyone can enjoy, and that build a unique and special relationship between family members, children need to develop their own likes and dislikes and sense of accomplishment. Professionals stress the importance of acknowledging and “applauding” their efforts and accomplishments, but not necessarily “always” taking an active part in their pursuits. This they say, helps them explore new options on their own, giving them something unique to share, teaches about themselves, and builds self –esteem as they bring something new (something they did or learned on their own) to the table to share.
