Internal sonograms

My first doctor's appointment is next week. They plan on doing an internal sonogram. I have a friend who told me NOT to get an internal so early(6-7 weeks). She's old school and feels they "stir" everything" up.

Now, I believe in modern technology and how they can detect problems, etc. But, in reading a couple of posts today about bleeding after an internal, 3 people miscarried the DAY after their internal. I am now scared, and don't even know if I want to go.


Any thoughts?

I would ask your doctor. I have never heard of it being an issue.

Talk to your doctor about your fear. I did and felt much better about it. Also - I've never heard of an internal exam causing a m/c.

Oh sweetie

Even though I m/c'd the day after the internal exam doesn't mean you will too. I truly think the internal just sped up the inevitable. I don't think the pregnancy would have progressed much further than it did. My pregnancy symptoms going on and off a couple days before the internal, and i just had a gut feeling something was wrong. Kind of like the same gut feeling you have when you know you're pregnant.

I asked the dr that very question, Did the internal make me m/c? He said absolutely NOT! He explained to me that those first very moments after the sperm meets the egg are so tender. Could be an old egg/bad sperm or something could have happened when the cells split. Once the cells split if something goes wrong the same error is duplicated over and over again and sometimes the pregnancy progresses until it reaches the error. Mother nature then corrects it's error to stop a baby with severe defects from entering the world.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do, OR THAT YOU DID to prevent an early m/c within the first couple weeks.

Please, Please, Please don't worry!

I hope I didn't make you more worried, but for me I took comfort that I did happen when it did and not later in the PG.

The prob of having a successful pregnancy are in every woman's favor! 4 out 5 pregnancies go to term, that's great odds!

I know it's hard, but try not to worry. Look forward to seeing your little one's first pic.

Wannabee, I TOTALLY understand and relate to your fears.. my first appointment is next Tuesday also and I am having an internal .. and YES I am freaking out a bit, but mostly I try to overcome my fears because I know that by having the internal done, I will be able to make sure my little bean is OK and progressing at the right pace..

Of course its only normal that whenever you read a post about someone else having a problem (or , God forbid, a M/C), we think about ourselves too and put ourselves in that other girls' shoes..

BUT I do agreee with Michele that if a miscarriage is going to happen, its going to happen .. internal or not, its out of our hands inevitably and there is NOTHING we , as women, can do to prevent it... I do not think that 'medically' by doing an internal that this procedure "causes" a miscarriage, but I would discuss your fears with your doctor so you come to the right decision for YOU. If you'd feel more comfortable NOT having an internal this early along, than noone should make you!

I had about 5 internal sonograms the first few weeks of my pregnancy. Unfortunately it is the only way to see anything that early in a pregnancy. Try to think good thoughts

Awwwww, I can relate to your fears, I really can. When I had my first m/c, the bleeding started immediately after DH and I BD'd... I was CONVINCED that's what caused it, and once I got pregnant again, I was so scared for him to even touch me! The thing is, pregnancy is such a fragile thing, especially the first trimester - so, so, so, so many of them don't last past the first few weeks because there are so many minute factors that go into a successful pregnancy... the point is, there's absolutely nothing that you can do to prevent it, or bring it on. An internal, or sex, or whatever, won't cause a miscarriage. At most, it will just speed up a process that was already in the works, and inevitable... try not to worry. For as many women who have come out of an internal with bleeding, many others haven't... you'll be ok

I believe it's the only way they can do a sono...the external ones can't pick anything up that early on

I agree with everything the girls above have said. I think it's important actually to have a u/s at about 7 weeks because that's when you would almost certainly see a heartbeat. However, make sure your beta, is over 1500 when going for a u/s. At 6-7 weeks it most certainly should be. That's another reason why doctors wait, that long for u/s. The U/s machines usually can't detect a sac or a fetal pole when your hcg is lower than 900. Some doctors do u/s very early and cause alarm. I am sure you will have a wonderful u/s experience :) STICKY VIBES :)

I saw my baby's heartbeat at 7 weeks - but i was told that 6 weeks might be too early - and to not get alarmed if you don't see a heartbeat then - most doctor's offices won't see you until after the 7th week or so anyway.

Maybe you could push back your doctor's appointment for another week?

Its a very anxious time, any which way you do it - but im sure everything will be fine and you will see your bean's heartbeat in no time. Just keep faith and everything will turn out alright.

Thanks for your thoughts and insight. I just wanted to clarify something, I do not think that internals can CAUSE a m/c, I just thought it was wierd that some girls experienced them soon after an internal. From your responses I now understand that they can speed up the inevitable, I feel more comfortable knowing this.

i am one of the girls having a mc after a sono and i first thought the same thing but i dont think a dr would let you come in so early if they thought it may cause harm. Good luck keep us posted.
