Another question regarding recall.

My parents' family pet (and mine also) got sick sick St. Patrick's Day weekend. My mom and Scott brought Benji, who is 15, to the vet. They said he had kidney failure. Luckily with the right medication, he made it. The food my mom buys is not on the recall list, but when my mom brought the food in, the vet told her it was expired. My mom bought it on 3/14 and the bood expired in December.

Well the vet bills totaled $3000. Scott thinks that it has nothing to do with the recall and has to do with the fact it was expired. Do you think that the pet store is responsoble? I don' t think they are going to pay the vet bill. I think they are going to blame it on the recall.

I'm trying to do some investigating. We are very happy that Benji has pulled through. But he is still weak.

I can't imagine that expired food would cause kidney failure. The recalled food had rat poison in it- THATS whatcaused the kidney failure. Any chance you can have the food tested?

Also, renal failure is pretty common in older pets- so I don't think the pet store would have done anything other than give a refund on the food.

I agree with Amy in that the only way to know would be to have the food tested. Was it Walmart food? If it was you may have a chance, if not most of the manufacturers said their dry food was not made by Menu Products.
As far as being expired, that would be considered your responsibility to check the expiration date so the most the store may do is offer you a refund on the food.
It doesn't hurt to try, though.

It was mighty dog wet food for seniors. My mom purchased a chase of the food. She purchased it on the 14th and the dog got sick within a few days.

I don't know what to tell you. On the Purina website, they say they only recalled the pouch foods and that was only because of the overwhelming recall of Menu Products. It also says on the Purina website that there is no reason to think that Mighty Dog pouch food is involved in the Menu recall, they are just doing it as a courtesy.
They also state that they are NOT recalling the canned or packaged foods at all.

hmm I thought I remembered Scott saying that there was a trace of the poison in Benji's blood, but that might have been another poster. I'd call the Center where Benji was treated and ask if any bloodwork revealed if there was any of the poison in Benji's system. I know that it is detectable in a blood test. If you are unsuccessful there, then I would again call the corporate offices of the store, but you will most likely be asked to prove via a receipt the date of purchase vs. the date of expire, and if it was a "reasonable" amount of time.

Thank you. My mom found the receipt for March 14th and the expiration date was in Decemeber.

have it tested. However I relaly don't think that sealed food that expired in december would or should be bad enough to severaly hurt or kill an animal. There is a certain amount of leeway assumed with these products I would think. Defintiely pursie it with the store, and defintiely take legal action. How can everyone get away with harming out pets?
