Grooming help PLEASE

Especially long haired smaller dogs...

I liek Abby with longer hair, but I dont know how to keep up with it. ( shes a shiuh tzu/Lhasa mix for anyone who dont know)

How often should she be "trimmed?"

And even when I bruch her all the time, she gets matts in cetain spots ( behind her ears and in the crook of her legs and arms)....I brush there?

Is there a special brush or tool to help prevent this ?

And Then once she gets matted the groomer wants to "Shave it all off"...I know its less traumatic for her to just do that , so I let them.

Any grooming advice from BTDT doggie moms????

Re: Grooming help PLEASE

I have the same exact issue with Molly. I LOVE her with longer hair but the knots are just too much. When the groomer comes he has no choice but to shave her down. The last time she got groomed was actually the first time I liked her hair short - normally I hate it and wait for it to grow back.

There is some detangler that they sell in pet stores but I didn't find that to work at all. Even when I brushed her, some of the knots would come out but there would be some that I just couldn't get.

Sorry - no help at all!

Re: Grooming help PLEASE

My grandfather's Shih Tzu HATES having a full coat, so he kept her in a puppy cut. She would go to the groomer once every 3 weeks for it. He also used the detanglers & such (professional grade; not the one you can buy in the store) and it worked to an extent.

Re: Grooming help PLEASE

Dottie actually has very thick hair and her breed typically keeps it long. I get her a puppy cut, because 1. it's easier to manage and 2. she looks so much cuter Chat Icon

Anyway, when her hair is getting on the long side we use this brush:

Gets out ALL of the knots and tangles.
You should be brushing behind her ears and under her legs. I know it's a sensetive spot, I just do it really slow and gently.
But, this brush is awesome. I think she likes the massage she gets from it too Chat Icon

ETA: I get her groomed every 5-6 weeks. So much more managable that way.

Do you know the brand of the brush? Where to buy?

Thanks for the suggestions.

We were getting her done about every 8 weeks and its obviously too long.....

Sorry - I should have said earlier, duh!

We got it at Target. They actually have it online, I know you are on bedrest. Chat Icon

Brush

They also have a dematting brush

I would be careful with that one. It's designed to cut through the knots. But it might save you some $$ on grooming.

Good luck!Dematting Brush
