Cats and Pregnancy
Is it really dangerous to change the kitty litter while pregnant? If I wear gloves, will I be safe, or should I have DH change it every time? I'm sure you ladies know how it is asking men to do things around the house...
Oh, my cats are indoor cats.

Here is one thing that I found:
Many pregnant women have cats in their household. Why should pregnant women avoid coming in contact with cat litter?
Toxoplasmosis is a common infection found in up to 40% of all cat owners. It´s a minor infection that normally does not cause any side effects at all. However, it can be extremely harmful to a developing fetus. For this reason, pregnant women should turn over cat litter duties to someone else during their pregnancy.
It is only the cat stool that carries this threat, so keep the litter box somewhere away from the regular family areas, and have someone other than the mother care for the box during the pregnancy period. Once the baby is born, the baby and the cats can grow up together.

I had my Dr. tell dh what could happen.
Anyway trust me, one less thing for you to do as you get further along the better!

My DH did it for my entire pregnancy. It just wasn't worth the risk to me. He didn't mind doing it either knowing it was safest for our baby.

it is dangerous...it's not the touching but the breathing of it the smell in! DO NOT CHANGE THE LITTER

See this is something that like other things is debatable apparently. I asked my specialist and she said toxoplasmosis(sp?) Is only transmitted by out door cats, If my cats never left the house sine they were born, I had no chance of getting it, and changing the litter was fine.
I did not want to risk it, which is why I asked. Im still uncertain based on this, but this is what I foudn online
" Toxoplasmosis is only likely to occur in outdoor cats as it is transmitted to the cat through hunting of small animals, the incidence of Toxoplasmosis in indoor cats has not been founded. "

I heard this as well. And that if they don't eat any raw meat, there is a slim chance also. BUT...as the girls said above, better safe than sorry, right? Thanks everyone!

I don't think it's the smell, it's something in the actual feces itself. So if you do change it, just make sure to wash your hands.

Oh, my cats are indoor cats.
YOu really shouldnt change it at all and this notr only goes for while you are PG but for as long as you are still planning on having kids you shouldnt change it.
Its bad to breath in the dust. DH changes our litter since Im PG and I wont go near it til after I am done having children.
