accepting a position *UPDATE*
so here is my dilemma. I have a commitment letter from the city, but I have not found a job yet and I just got offered a position at a catholic school. There is a difference in salary but not a huge one.
This is my first year and all I am looking for is expericence, not a long term career at a specific school. What would you do?
**UPDATE**
Thank you for all of the advice, but i turned down the catholic school position b/c I was offered a job at an awesome public school in Queens!! I am so excited that I don't have to interview or demo anymore!!

Re: accepting a position - poll
I believe in the "bird in the hand" idea, so I'd take the position. If you can live on the salary more power to you!

Re: accepting a position - poll
I think the general consensus would be to take the job you were offered. Job offers seem to be a rarity these days, why would you not want to take one that was offered to you?
Like the PP said - if you can live on the salary, go for it!

Re: accepting a position - poll
With the committment letter, the city has to find you something, right? Would you be happier with the catholic school position, or the worst-possible NYC position (worse-case scenario, but hopefully they'll find you something in a good area)??
the issue with a catholic school position is it doesn't put you into the retirement system.

that is precisely my dilemma....I am guaranteed a job with the city. but who knows where, what grades and how bad of a school it might be in.
If i am driving to the bronx everyday or commuting into the city, the salary difference becomes a lot smaller.
but on the other hand I could end up queens in a decent school.
Decisions....decisions....

Re: accepting a position - poll
we're on the same page in our thinking
honestly, I would take the catholic school position for now, and see what the city comes up with. I know it sounds rude to the catholic school, but they have to know with the low $$ they pay, and no retirement benefits, that people are looking elsewhere.

It's a high school so the pay is ok. Not as bad as one would expect. They also contribute to your 403b and there are a few additional perks. Plus the commute would be pretty good!

City will count towards retirement, catholic school will not.

Can you take the catholic school position and see what happens with the city?
