Teachers who have a "Job" and not a "career"

When I was at the school last week, I met with the other teacher in my dept.

Now I am a very enthusiastic (of course aren't all NEW teachers). But this is how I am normally. I am VERY outgoing and really want to be the best that I can.

So I am the kind of person who wants to go to conferences and take classes and get involved with the students. The AP asked if I would be interested in restarting up DECA because the school doesn't have one. So I was all excited because I competed when I was in HS.

So anyway, I was talking to the other teacher and I was like "Yea AP wants me to get DECA going" and she's like "I wouldn't. It's too much work. She has been asking me for years."

As the day progressed and the more we spoke I just felt like teaching is her job. She does what she has to and leave. Now that isn't how I am.

How do you handle someone like this? Especially since its only the two of us in our dept? I don't want to make her look "bad" by me just being myself and wanting to be involved because I don't want there to be any bad blood. But I don't want to not be myself, because I know what kind of teacher I am.

My advice, DO IT! This other woman is most likely afraid you are going to make her look bad. I've encountered this before. Coworkers that didn't want me to do extra, but wouldn't share any ideas either. You have to prove yourself and can't worry what others think Chat Icon
