Classroom Rules
I bought a poster to list my rules and so far I have:
You shall do nothing that prevents:
yourself from learning
your classmates from learning
me from teaching
Be in your assigned seat and ready to work when the bell rings
Treat everyone and their property respectfully.
I teach 7th grade English in Queens
Can anybody add to this list for me?

i wouldn't add too many more. you should have around 3-5 rules tops.
mine are simple:
*treat everyone and their property with respect
*eyes on the teacher and mouths closed when she is teaching
*follow directions
they're not exactly in those words, but you get the point. keep it short and sweet

I think this might be a little too general- seventh graders can be smart azzes and you don't want to get into a debate over what sort of things prevent teaching and learning. You also don't want too many rules- more than 5 or 6.
My rules are:
- Remain in your seat unless you ask to get up.
-Keep hands, feet and objects to youself.
-Remain quiet when a teacher, student or guest are speaking.
-Follow directions the first time they are given.
- Be prepared with notebooks, pen/pencil and anything else the teacher requires.

I strongly suggest you get Harry Wong's "First Days of School". Great book.
He says to keep them concise, but when you explain them make sure you are detailed. I taught at a MS/HS last year and a huge problem was cell phones and PSPs. My advice be a stickler and be consistent.

I have first so it is very different...but we go over the rules as a class..I give them a post it and it goes on the door. It stays up all year and it is in the form of postives such as I will walk in the hall...as oppsed to the DO NOT rules.
The Wong book is excellent...some libraries have it too. I think I have a copy read somewhere if you wanted to borrow let me know! It is great!!!!
Good luck with the older ones and your class!

Be specific and positive.
I will respect the room by cleaning up after myself.
I will respect the class by listening and raising my hand.
I will respect myself by doing my best work and payiing attention.

I read that book!! I had it out as I was making my rules. I am already planning on having to walk my students into the hallway to show them the proper way to enter my room on the first day! lol
I like the Wong book, but like almost everything out there, it is so elementary school focused IMO.

1. Be on time to class.
2. Be prepared for class.
3. Be involved.
4. Be respectful.
5. Be responsible.
6. Be safe.

I like the Wong book, but like almost everything out there, it is so elementary school focused IMO.
I found the same thing, (I did NOT like the Wong book at all, actually) but found 2 books that were great for HS techers! The first is "The First Year Teacher's Survival Kit" by Julia Thompson, and the other is "Your First Year as a High School Teacher" by Lynne Rominger, Suzanne Laughrea and Natalie Elkin. Both books are SO useful and helpful!!!

It's not so much that Wong's stuff is corny, it's just not my style. Lot's of the stuff he suggests takes a certain kind of personality to do, and that's just not my personality. JMHO
