Need some ideas on a local vacation
DH and I are already discussing next year's vacation. This summer we did a cruise in July for 7 days. We would love to do another cruise but it's so costly. So next year we decided to just lay low and do something local. So I was thinking something in Long Island for a few days.
Any suggestions from you LI ladies? Not the hamptons or Montauk. Not really interested in that.

What about the North fork? It is different enough from the Hamptons. Lots of nice restaurants in places like Greenport.

What about a drive up to Tarrytown and visiting all the mansions along the Hudson River. Read this web site

Is it a long drive?
Oh I also forgot to mention that it will be a family vacation. We have 1 child that will be 2 when we go on this vacation.

What about Riverhead?
Or Fireisland? How does that work. Do you stay at a hotel on firelsland or do you stay at a hotel near the ferry terminal that takes you to fireisland?

Tarrytown is probably an hour and a half drive from eastern LI. Once you cross the Throgs Neck/Whitestone bridge, it's right before the Tappanzee Bridge (maybe 2-3 exits before).

There isn't much to see in Riverhead except the aquarium, which a day trip at best.
Fire Island has the beaches, the lighthouse.....

Most people take the ferry from Bay Shore, and there really aren't any hotels nearby the terminal. There are some small motels on Fire Island, but for July they will book quickly, and may have minimum requirements of several days or a week. Fire Island is nice, but if I was going with a family for several days I would probably go somewhere with a more family-oriented beach. Fire Island during the summer is like a big meat market with all of the young singles that rent houses (omg i sound so old! lol!).
We went to Wildwood State Park last summer (in Wading River) and loved it.

How many days did you go for? Our DS will be 2 next summer and the couple we are going away with has a little boy too who will be 1 and a half during the summer so something very family oriented would be great yes...

Re: Need some ideas on a local vacation
go to shelter island. It's insanely beautiful and the place where we go (Pridwin hotel) has cottages that are perfect for families. There's a pool and you can swim in the bay. If you do the midweek special - you book 3 nights and get the 4th included (breakfast and dinner included). There's tennis (must pay $), canoes, bikes, shuffleboard, a game room that is pretty retro but still fun). The town of shelter island heights is a nice walk (or really quick drive) away and there are ice cream parlors, etc. You could also take the ferry to greenport and walk around there - ride the carousel, shop, etc.
DH and I have gone now for the last 4 summers or so - this summer we took DD who was @ 3 months. During the week there are LOADS of families so it was nice seeing all the little kids playing.
