I have a tenth grader this year who does NOT like school. Today, he informed me that To Kill a Mockingbird "isn't bad." (This, of course, is like a reader saying he loves a book.) When I told him I knew that, he said, "no, seriously. It's actually the only book we read in school that isn't bad." It was VERY hard not to laugh. It was also very hard not to jump for joy.

that's awesome! it's such a great feeling when you finally "crack" a kid and get them interested in something!

Yeah, it really made me so happy. I don't know... I think I'm definitely getting through to him because twice in the past three days, he's randomly decided to tell me about his girlfriend. SO CUTE. (They've been together five whole days now. Chat Icon )

You should have him read The Catcher in the Rye. He'll loooove Holden.

That was the first book we read this year. Chat Icon You'd be surprised by how many of them think that book is so dated. Some kids do still identify with Holden but never as many as I think will.

ETA: Today he said, "I don't like this book." I made a face at him and said, "Yes you do," and he started laughing and said, "Yeah, ok, it isn't bad." Oh, how they love to toy with my emotions. Chat Icon
