The rhythm method
Does anyone do this? My last pack of BC is next month and I am not ready to get pregnant anytime soon. I was thinking of just trying the rhythm method but I am scared since I have relied on BC for 10 years But it really is time to give my body a break.
SO, does anyone use this successfully? I looked it up and there are a lot more fertile days in the month than I expected.
If you do use this method can you give me more info as to how you figure out when to have sex and when not?
THANKS!

I agree but I wouldn't use either method unless you are truly prepared for an "oops".

Re: The rhythm method
I use FAM (I took a class in it, a while back.)...check temps in AM, check cervical fluid.
The stressful part is the before-ovulation days. In the class, I learned that the first signs of cervical fluid is the first sign of fertility days. That doesn't leave a lot of safe days pre-ovulation. But there's always condoms those days.
My cycle lengths the first 6 months after BCP have been different each month. So FAM is great for that.
FAM is worth it to me for being off hormones.
Good luck with what you choose.

I use FAM (...)...check temps in AM, check cervical fluid. I did as well - for about 3 years - to prevent pregnancy. I had been on BC for over 10 years and just had enough.
Then when we were ready to get pregnant...I used the same method and got pregnant the first month.

yes.... you could also do research under what is called Natural Family Planning.
the difference between FAM/NFP and the rhythm method, is that with NFP, is that you only have intercourse on the days you want to conceive or NOT want to conceive. you become a lot more aware of your cycle and the days you are actually ovulating, or not ovulating.
the rhythm method is actually just having intercourse when ever and "pulling out" before ejaculation... sorry if that's TMI .
to truly understand your cycle, it is recommended that you abstain from intercourse for 30 days so you can track your cycle (you monitor cervical mucus, take your temperture, etc.)
Look up the Creighton method online... very informative. (This is NFP)

Re: The rhythm method
Did your dr. tell you to take a break from BC? I asked mine about any long-term effects, and she said there are no side effects or problems from using it long term...I love having such a regular, light period so until I absolutely want to TTC I am staying on it. Anyway, I've never tried the rhythm method...I'd be too scared if I wasn't ready to be PG.

Some people take a "break" after getting off BPCs so they can get a hold of their body/cycles. It's good to establish some sort of trackable routine. That said, every body works differently...it took mine a long time to regulate after getting off BCPs. While others got pregnant the first month off and that was that.

just to give you some info.., studies have shown that extensive use of hormonal methods of BC can increase your chances breast cancer.

yes... in addition, BC can also DECREASE fertility. prolonged use can actually strip your natural uterine lining... and/or make conception difficult because your body gets so used to artifically created ovulation.... many people became very irregular once getting off BC.

Well, I feel like the fact that women who use birth control pills experience ovarian & endometrial cancer at about half the rate of nonusers kind of balances out the statistics that show that there may be an increased risk of breast cancer and cervical cancer in women who use birth control pills for more than five years.
There are also just as many studies that show BCP aid in fertility:
Women who take birth control pills for long periods of time may find it a little easier to get pregnant once they go off the pill than other women.
A new study shows women who used oral contraceptives for more than five years before attempting to conceive are more likely to have success within six months or a year than women who have never used the pills or took them for a shorter period of time.
75.4% of the women who had been on the pill for more than five years conceived within six months of trying compared to 70.5% of women who had never used the pill. A similar advantage was found among long-term pill users who took up to a year to become pregnant compared to non-users (89.5% vs. 85.4%).
Although some previous research has suggested that using oral contraceptives may reduce fertility, researchers say those studies only looked at fertility immediately after stopping pill usage. Other studies have shown fertility returns to normal levels within three months, and this study backs up those findings.
Researchers say long-term pill users had the same fertility advantage whether they had previously had a child or not.
Researcher Alexandra Farrow, PhD, of the department of Health and Social Care at Brunel University in Isleworth, UK, and colleagues say prolonged use of birth control pills may have a protective effect on fertility by reducing the damaging effects of endometriosis and improving iron stores in women.
Other factors that were associated with a delay in conceiving in the study were the age of both the man and the woman, the woman's exposure to cigarette smoke, her level of education and her BMI (body mass index, a measure of weight in relationship to height).

Although there is a theory that someone already has to be pre-disposed to getting reproductive cancers, but even with a genetic work there is no way to tell 100%. My mom is a prime example. She had 2 tumors in her uterus, and 2 different kind of tumors in her breast (all within 6 months). Her team of doctors believe that it was the hormone therapy she was on in her teens and 20s that led to her cancers.
There are also new studies to see if any of the blood and heart related risks are long term as well.
