anyone not use the CIO method

I see so many moms post about the CIO method. I nver did it...and I don't think I would. Maybe its because I work all day and so does DH...so we look forward to cuddling the baby to sleep.

When James 1st came home from the hosptial CIO was not an option...he was still on Oxygen...and I think that making him CIO would have been a risk to his health at that time.

We all got used to cuddling him to sleep...and although it may not work for everyone...it works for us. I find that if I just sit with him and tell him a story or sing him to sleep...he is much more accomaditing and goes to sleep rather quickly...which give me and DH time together before we go off to sleep.

Does anyone else NOT use the CIO method?

Duh! Chat Icon
Thanks... and yes, we did this for a while with Frankie when he went through a faze of fussiness that would last 3 hrs or more..... We would let him cry for a good 15-30 min some times and adventually he would just fall asleep. Because all the waking, rocking, bouncing we did....it didn't make a damn difference. Now he is over that and I thank the Lord. I would dread every evening leading up to 7:00 PM, because that is when it would start and not maybe end till 11.... it is very fustrating....

If cuddling Alex to sleep was an option, I would have done it. I *did* it for 5 months and it got us absolutely nowhere. She would cry, fuss, and wrangle with us for hours when we tried cuddling, rocking, nursing, jiggling, you name it. And when she would fall asleep, she'd be back up in an hour or two, and we'd go through the same thing all over again for 1-2 hours trying to get her to sleep. So, I wouldn't look at it so much as something that's always a choice. If we kept up at the pace that we were, trying to cuddle and rock Alex to sleep, I probably would have ended up (1) unemployed, (2) in a car accident, and (3) as a terrible mommy because no one can function on that much sleep deprivation for 5 months in a row. It all depends on how your chid is... if he/she responds well to cuddling/rocking, then heck, I'd say do it as long as possible. But if cuddling/rocking to sleep results in NO sleep, it doesn't do anyone good, especially baby, because if I feel the way I do when I'm sleep deprived, I'm sure my little one won't be meeting her developmental milestones as easily if she's just as tired...

Just trying to give a CIO mom perspective...

Hey Boo!

Thankfully I never found myself in that situation. She was always a good sleeper from Day 1. Only during rare moments (like teething, etc.) did she give me a super hard time about sleeping. Maybe it's because I work so late that she's up and running til about 11:00 p.m. and she doesn't resist going to bed when I put her in. But since she pulled the TV down on herself, I've been sleeping in her room (I know, BAD idea and bad habit) because she was having night terrors from the experience and it was easier to grab her little hand between the slats of her crib and comfort her then to haul my butt out of bed at 3:00 a.m. Chat Icon

I never did it. It just would not have worked for me or Molly. It is not something I would have been comfortable with.

We have our own routine that works for us.

Re: anyone not use the CIO method

I am glad I never had to do any type of CIO method - I am not a fan of letting Michael cry for anything, but like you, it could be a guilt factor and the fact that I work all day, etc. So we have a bath and then cuddle on the glider with a bottle. I sit there with him until he's drowsy enough and is done with his bottle. Then I lay him down, rub his head and say "night night"... and out I go!

Re: anyone not use the CIO method

we dont do it either- It just didnt work for us and our situation. He sleeps with us and were fine with it. We usually rock him and put him in the co sleeper until Dh and I go to bed the he usually wakes up from the noise of us getting in- so if he cant fall asleep he comes in with us and he falls asleep within a few min.

We don't do it, our babies share a room so it wouldn't really be fair. Usually they end up just tiring themselves out.

I am away from my son while I am at work and I just can't rationalize being away from him and then letting him scream in the crib. I feel too guilty. I usually rock and nurse him to sleep and then put him in his crib. He usually wakes up once during the night and we just take him in the bed with us and I nurse him back to sleep. People probably won't agree with me but I am away from my son for 13 hours a day and I need to be near him!

Re: anyone not use the CIO method

what I think people that don;t CIO don't realize is that if your baby is really screaming - for a looong time- over a few days then you are either doing something wrong - or they aren't ready yet.

CIO really is only bad for one night - and really only because of the pressure we put on ourselves. I think we all believe a crying baby means we are a bad mom (which isnt the case!) After the first night you see results - and by three nights *usually* the baby is sleeping so much better.

I know a lot of you think it is cruel - it's not! I would never ever let Talia cry ALL the time for hours on end - it's not like that at all. IMHO - cruel is not allowing your child to have the best night sleep possible by any means necessary - Since I let Talia CIO she has been a MUCH happier baby, our QT is much better, I can tell she is more aware - much less fussy, and even eating more.

I am not trying to flame anyone or point any fingers, I believe everyone has to do what is good for them...I guess I just feel a little defensive that some people assume CIO is cruel and harmful to your children - or that the moms that use this method are cold.

Re: anyone not use the CIO method

We don't use CIO and I personally don't think I ever will. It is just not something I can do and I think part of that is because Miranda has acid reflux and spits up alot so I feel like I would never know if she spit up all over herself and I would also feel guilty if I let her get so upset that she spit up.
We are fortunate that without CIO we were able to train her to go to sleep on her own which she does very well. We rarely have a night that bedtime is a struggle and most days naps are pretty easy as well. Our problem is her night wakings. I've been half tempted to try to let her cry but I just can't do it. Miranda is really not a fussy baby and when she cries she always needs something and so I feel that if she's waking up she needs something even if its just the reassurance that we are near her. If any of her sleep habits affected her temperment during the day I might do otherwise but she's a really happy baby.

MrsR-
In response to your post....I have learned something since becoming a mother. It is not my place to judge how other people raise their children. By that I mean if they use CIO, choose to spank, BF or not, etc. Every family has to do what works best for them as a family and have the right to do that (of course as long as its not outright child abuse or something of that nature).
I am sure you are not cruel or cold. You chose to do what you needed to do for Talia and your family.
Before I had Miranda I had my whole list of "I'll never do that" and to my surprise I do so many of them.
I think some moms who use CIO may feel I'm stupid for not using it for her ngiht wakings but I'm just not ready for it and so I've just started napping with her during the day so that I don't get sleep deprived. Probably not the ideal alternative but it works for us just like CIO worked for you. I think we all need to do what makes us the best moms we can be and getting enough sleep is a big factor in that.

Well said Jen... I back you up on this 100%. I see a world of difference in Alex ever since we started. I might have to start using another nickname other than fussymonkeyfoot! Chat Icon I think what it comes down to is what works for you and your baby. If cuddling/rocking works and you and baby can get a good night's sleep (assuming you're at about 4 months or so, because we all know NO ONE can expect sleep before then! Chat Icon ), then great, I'd do that until Alex was 18 if I could. But, if that doesn't work for your baby, and he/she can't get a good night's sleep no matter what you do, including all the cuddling/rocking in the world, then other methods are often necessary.

Re: anyone not use the CIO method

The only thing that stops me cold from doing it is reading in more places than one that letting your baby CIO = them feeling "abandoned". I just can't get that out of my head. Neither one of us is getting ANY sleep and we're both miserable. DH keeps pressuring me to try CIO and I'm so reluctant. But I think I've tried everything else.

Would it be bad to get him out of our bed, into the crib and let him CIO all in one shot? Isn't that overload?

Re: anyone not use the CIO method

In defense of those of us who don't use CIO but tried it (per Dr. Ferber's instructions and under my ped's care) and it just doesn't work for some children. Just like adults, they have their own personalities and there is no one "magic bullet" solution to all problems.

Some babies make themselves physically ill when CIO is employed. Sarah did, and my ped. told me she's not the first child in his care who has done so. On the occasions where we tried it and she didn't work herself up to vomiting, she was hyperventilating.

Dr. Ferber himself has come out and said that highly sensitive children do not respond to his method and that it should not be used for those children.

Just wanted to present the flip side so that moms who were able to successfully use CIO can understand that it is not for everyone, and not just because some people think it's cruel.

I know that part of me feels the same as you and also reading in some places about babies getting Reactive Attachment Disorder from CIO freaks me out some but I am trying to take things with a grain of salt because there are always arguments for both sides.

Have you read "The No Cry Sleep Solution"? I am getting ready to borrow this from someone to see if we can work through Miranda's night awakenings without leaving her there to cry.

She only awoke once last night though but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.

Re: anyone not use the CIO method

I have never had to use this method.
I dont want to say I think its wrong because I know every child is different and every parent has to do what they think is best but I just cant see letting a child cry.
What if he dosent feel well? what if something was bothering them? Babies usually ( I know not always) cry for a reason.. I rather figure that reason out then just have them fall asleep from being tired from crying.

I guess this is a personal parenting choice, but it would never work with me.
