Singulair.. did anyone see this?
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it is investigating a possible link between Merck's allergy drug Singulair and suicide.
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Food and Drug Administration said Thursday it is investigating a possible link between Merck's allergy drug Singulair and suicide.
FDA said it is reviewing reports of mood changes, suicidal behavior and suicide in patients who have taken the drug, which was Merck's best-selling product last year.
In an e-mail received by 13News on Thursday, the FDA said users shouldn't stop using Singulair before talking with their doctor.
The FDA stresses that healthcare professionals and caregivers should monitor patients taking Singulair for suicidality (suicidal thinking and behavior) and changes in behavior and mood.
Singulair and suicide information : In the past year Merck has updated the drug's labeling four times to include information on tremors, anxiousness, depression and suicidal behavior reported in some patients.
Singulair had sales of $4.3 billion last year.
Shares of Merck & Co. Inc. fell 10 cents to $44.60 in late morning trading.

This is not the first drug to be linked with suicide, depression or psychological issues.
I have been on Singulair for probably over 7 years (could be less). I've been fine.

I agree that it may be nothing to worry about. However, if there is someone who is already suffering from and/or is being medicated for depression, it might be best to find an alternative until the link can be explored more fully.

Oh DEFINITELY. Predispositions and treatments for existing disorders can be exacerbated by a drug like this.

Same here, I've been on it for about 8 years and was very surprised by this report. But there was 4 cases of suicide reported and I can't imagine how many people take Singulair in this country so I feel like the risk is pretty low. Still surprisig though.

Re: Singulair.. did anyone see this?
I spoke with the psychiatrist at my school today abuot the Singulair report- I work in psychiatric day treatment. She felt that the resport was publicized way too prematurely and the odds are that the research is NOT complete.
I saw a report on how Accutane (for acne) may have an effect on the psyche of people who are predisposed to mental illness and she concuured that the information on Accutane is much more substantial that that of Singulair. I think it was irresposible for the media to put something out there are scare people - she did too.
