extremely overactive thyroid
My brother is 22 years old and just found out he has an EXTREMELY overactive thyroid (to the tune of a normal level being 5 and his is 28...
He is going to go for radioactive iodine treatment. I was wondering if anyone has gone for this procedure and if it really did fix your thyroid problems? The drs said that it will likely wind up being underactive after the treatment and he'll need meds for ever

Re: extremely overactive thyroid
My father had it. He was overactive and it caused problems with his heart so they had to do the iodine also. He is on synthroid now (just like I am) and he will be for the rest of his life. Synthroid is a synthetic replacement for what your body is just not absorbing. It's not bad and there are no side effects that I know of. It is far more harmful to let an overactive thyroid go untreated. I am assuming that he has seen an endo and this is what the endo thinks is best. If so then he should do it.

Re: extremely overactive thyroid
a friend of mine did NOT do this... although it was presented as an option. she was seating profusely, couldn't stop eating, but still losing weight, had the shakes, etc. they actualyl thought she had bi-polar disorder (similar symptoms at first). she was able to control it through meds. for an overatctive thyroid instead of doing the radiation.

Re: extremely overactive thyroid
I had the same thing. The radioactive iodine will probably make the thyroid really slow, or not work at all. He will have to take Synthroid for the rest of his life. It was really no big deal at all. Tell him not to worry.

Re: extremely overactive thyroid
My mom had hyperthyroidism and was treated with radioactive iodine. She also had sonograms of her thyroid and biopsies to make sure there was no cancer. The radioactive iodine basically "kills" the thyroid and you become hypothyroid and need to take synthroid for life. With proper monitoring, your brother will be fine. This is a very treatable condition.
