Another nursing question

Several years ago when I was living in St. Louis I was so close to taking the classes I needed and applying for the accelerated program there but, DH got layed off and my life was put on hold.

So now many things have changed but not my desire to become a nurse. So, I'm looking into it again.

I'd be doing a career change and a major one. I have a degree in economics and I work as a paralegal. I can't do an accelerated program now b/c I have a 2 year old but I feel I can definatley go back to school. What programs can you suggest? I have to work b/c of the COL in NY so school would be at night and/or on weekends. I'm in no hurry to finish and I know it will take a while. Do you think I'm too old to do this? I'm only 34 and that gives me a good 30 years until I retire so I should be ok.

Any thoughts or help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Another nursing question

Nope you are not too old at all, a large majority of nursing students are older and are pursuing this as a career change. I started but had to stop due to health reasons.

Ther are certain pre-requisites that need to be taken before you can even apply to a nursing program, not sure where you live but I know Farmingdale, Suffolk CC and Nassau CC have great programs.

There is a great website www.allnurses.com that can provide you with a wealth of information

Good luck to you

Thank you so much for the info. I know I'll have to take some science classes at least.

I live and work right by Farmingdale! I'll look into their program.

I would say that the majority of students in my nursing programs were in their 30s. There were a bunch in their early 20s, mid 50s... it really was a wide range. I took night classes though, so it was mostly older students/change of career. I don't think that any age is too old to better yourself. Chat Icon
