DH is afraid of flying...

We are leaving in 12 days for Disney (wahoo Chat Icon ), but I am worried about DH getting anxiety about flying. He keeps talking about being afraid, but he hasn't been on a plane in 15 years.
Any suggestions on what I can do to comfort or reassure him?
Thanks Chat Icon

Re: DH is afraid of flying...

1. Booze Chat Icon All of the people I know that can't stand to fly chug a little booze to calm them down.

2. Statistics. If he is afraid of flying because he is worried about a crash, there are oodles of stats out there that show flying is safer than driving ANYHERE. There are thousands and thousands of flights a year and less than 5 crashes a year. Put together a little stat sheet of info like that Chat Icon I always think of that kind of stuff when we hit some turbulence and I get jittery on a plane.

Have a great trip!

Re: DH is afraid of flying...

Some Docs will prescribe meds for anxiety he can take.... but since its perscription, your DH may have to go in for a visit to get the prescription. Call your primary physician and see what he/she can do

Re: DH is afraid of flying...

We had the same experience....DH hates to fly and so do I...I just dealt with it...DH says he will never fly again.

Maybe something to make him sleep like cold medicine...Xanax is good if you can get a presciption.

Many doctors will give you a small prescription for xanax or ativan specifically for flying. I am a nervous flyer and I have gotten this.

Re: DH is afraid of flying...

Put Rescue Remedy in his water. It is herbal and he will not be drunk form it. It just chills you out.

Re: DH is afraid of flying...

Wow, Dina, I had no idea about rescue remedy, i will have to try that though since I hate to fly ! I do give it to my goldens though !!

I usually take xanax or valium beforehand and a bloody mary at some bar in the airport ! I am a really bad flyer but the xanax did work for me !

Re: DH is afraid of flying...

Lately the only way I can fly is if I take xanax.

Re: DH is afraid of flying...

If he does not have a perscription, give him an OTC sleeping aid. Tylenol cold or nyquil should do the trick.

Have fun!

Re: DH is afraid of flying...

Promise him a little something something when you land Chat Icon
I am not a fan of taking a drug (drinking is OK though Chat Icon ) to feel comfortable but I know plenty of people that do! Just be aware that since it is a relatively short flight, he might still feel the effects when you land. You might be on your own to get the luggage, etc.

Re: DH is afraid of flying...

I hate flying too...to the point where if we hit even the slightest bump I'm panicking and grabbing onto DH..
I still force myself to fly though... we went to Hawaiit for our honeymoon and it was terrible...but totally worth it!!
