Dieting=dangerous

I posted on Monday about my gain; I cheated a little too much this weekend and was up 4lbsChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

This has become an obsession, it's sooo bad I lost sleep over it last night and woke up @ 3:30am to weigh myselfChat Icon

I'm not sure why its effecting me like this, but in the past 2 days I have considered purging and laxatives. In the end I don't think Id ever go through with it, but cant understand for the life of me- why this is getting me so down...

The last time I did WW, I would feel "guilty" anytime I would cheat, I would joke around that it was better being "fat" because I was less self conscious, but never ever did I get like this..

Im not sure if its because the competition is drawing near, therefore the pressure is on. Or if I have become obsessed with dieting.

PLEASE someone tell me Im not crazy, and that this is just a phase...


I keep telling myself I will come off as fast as it came on, but I feel like I let myself down, and totally undid 2 weeks of hard work...

I had to remove my response and think of something else, since my suggestion was throwing out your scale!!

Okay, I participated in a biggest loser contest at work - needless to say i wasn't the "winner" but it got my butt in gear to start exercising and I lost 4 pounds as a bonus.

I think that yes, you are obsessing over the numbers on the scale - but if my memory serves me correctly - its the percentage of weight they go by, not pounds lost.

so you over did it one weekend - thats not the end of the world - but the fact that you are obsessing over it concerns me. its okay to be competitive but you are actually losing sleep over letting yourself indulge a bit.

I think this contest is making your obsession worse!!!

I should stop weighing myself everyday, but Im addicted.

Yes, STOP weighing yourself every day! Please. It is very dangerous during the weightloss stage to do that!

I was obsessed at one point too. I still kind of am, but not as bad as I was.

Are you exercising? I bet if you start exercising, you will obsess over that! It's better than obsessing over the scaleChat Icon

Give the scale to your mom or someone and weigh yourself once a week at the same exact time.

You have to change your mind in order to keep it off. If you are just doing it for the challenge, then it is all the wrong reasons. Your mind has to be in it for the long-haul not just the 12 weeks (or however long the challenge is). So, you have to ask yourself...are you ready to do this for the rest of your life? Then, live your life accordingly. If you are not prepared to give up let's say cake forever...then don't! Just limit. Change your habits. But don't deprive yourself...because that's when binges happen.

And please, dont do anything to harm yourself!!!!!!

No, you are not crazy. i think we have all been in your position. I go through those phases.

I do WW and am very conscious of my body now than when i was heavier so every bump, roll, etc kills me.

If you stray don't beat yourself up. If you have a good day remember the accomplished feeling at the end of the day when you have an urge to cheat or just get fustrated.

I would say to focus more on being healthy than dieting.

As someone who had issues with losing weight in a unhealthy way, the last thing you want is for dieting tohave long term effects.

Bingeing & purging (serious heart damage, tooth decay), laxatives (bowels damage - you also become dependent on a laxative) all affect how your body works. It also isn't a lifestyle you would want to see modeled by your child.

It also doesn't work long term. By the time food gets to the bowel, 70% to 80% of the calories in the food have been absorbed. So you may show weight loss for a day because you've just dehydrated your body, but the next day it will be back and you wouldn't have lost any fat. Bingeing & purging also has permanent ramifications. Tooth decay (which is NOT fixable) and heart damage (erratic potassium levels disturbs your heart rhythm) are major side effects. It also makes your face look fatter & puffier - which is the real reason not to do it.Chat Icon

I would concentrate on the long-term & what message you are sending to your son as you eat & exercise. If anything that would be what keep you on the right path.Chat Icon

I joined WW back in 2004 and lost a significant amount of weight, once I got preg. I stopped dieting, but continued my lifestyle of cutting portions and monitoring what I ate.

After giving birth I held onto about 20lbs, I managed to maintain the same weight for over 2yrs mainly because of all the I had learned from being on WW in the past.

I already KNOW Im in this for the long haul, I needed to get my arse in gear to lose those 20lbs, but I know what it takes to keep off what I have lost.

I have learned to not give up anything. Rather just limit my intake or portion of lets say, cake.

I really dont know what happened this weekend, I did indulge but not 4lbs of over indulging... KWIM?

I really dont think the competition has anything to do with my
obsession; since I really could care less if I win or lose. To me, it was just a little extra something to keep me motivated.

Im disappointed with myself, like I said previously, I feel like I "undid" all my hard work in one weekend...

I weigh myself everyday- I know I shouldnt but I do... I feel it keeps me "grounded". I will say I didnt have my scale this weekend- so didnt weigh myself at all- so a part of me blames my gain on that...

I would never ever go through with laxatives or purging, its too gross to me- but what got me concerned is that the thoughts entered my mind...It shouldnt get to that point...

I do excercise, nothing crazy- I walk and I play wii fit. Unfortunately thats all I have time for.

This morning I weighed myself, and I was 1lb away from my weigh in last week- SOOOO I guess I was just carrying my meal and/or ate too much salt which made me retain water.

By Friday I should be back at my weight, ideally Id like to be down 1lb from last week, but Ill take just being back at my weight from last week...

The whole process is soo fustrating...

You are doing a great job! You really need to give yourself a little leeway. Okay, so you enjoyed a couple of extra things on the weekend. There will be times like that in life...but in the scheme of things...no biggie. If you have are eating healthily the majority of the time, you will still lose weight & BE HEALTHY.

I know others have said it.....BUT stop weighing yourself daily. It's natural for body weight to shift up & down. Forget the binging & purging talk---that type of thinking is just a recipe for disaster!!

I've noticed for myself, in the past, when I became obsessive about losing weight and eating right, and really went so far to the extreme, I would ALWAYS end up gaining the weight back because no one can live in that kind of extreme.

Giving yourself a guilt trip over a treat here and there is going to end up in trouble - you have to be forgiving of yourself, and remember that it's the long-term goal, not the little treat here and there, that will make the most impact. It's healthy, and important to build into your diet room for treats, without feeling bad, because once you feel bad, that's when you start the rollercoaster of emotional dieting that will defeat you.

Stop weighing yourself every day - do it once a week, and even when you see a weight gain, you have to rationalize with yourself that the scale doesn't necessarily reflect your new lifestyle.

Yes, it is frustrating. But see, it is almost a week later and you see how much your weight changed.
