One more question: re: anorexia & the overweight wanting to lose weight

Anoriexia is a SERIOUS disorder.

Those w/anorexia have a problem with eating (obviously, + whatever it stems from).

Do those of us that want to lose 10, 20, 30lbs or more also have a disorder? Why can't the overweight just stop, eat right, exercise and be done with it..logically, as if you'd tell an anorexic to eat?

Is it the same disorder only in reverse?

Thoughts/Opinions?

I don't know.......*I* think it is all about self control - anorexics have it - meaning they control every aspect of what goes in there mouth - while overweight people - or even the ones that have 10-20 pounds to lose - have less self control, can't quite stick to a diet or exercise program.

I don't really have an answer but those are my thoughts!

I agree with a lot of what Kara said. I would think that it only affect those that have significantly more to lose in that manner.

For myself personally, I honestly have no idea why I became the way I did over the course of my life nor why it took me so long to choose to do anything about it. Chat Icon

Any way you look at it though they are both eating disorders that should be taken very seriously Chat Icon

Re: One more question: re: anorexia & the overweight wanting to lose weight

I definitely don't think it's the reverse.

With anorexia, food, exercise, calories, etc. are a total obsession from the moment of waking up in the morning until going to bed at night (even dreaming about it at night). It completely consumes their whole life, and they can't help it.. it's way more than just will power or habit, there's a lot of fear & other emotions that are a part of it.

I don't think most overweight/obese people are completely and totally obsessed with what they're eating all day every day. I think it's based more on habit, that they're used to eating a certain way and not exercising, and as a result gain lots of weight which becomes more and more difficult to lose as time goes on. I'm sure that depression and self-image definitely play a role but I don't believe it is as extreme for most overweight people as it is for someone who is anorexic.

Yep, you saved me from writting it. I do sometimes get frustrated when overweight people say they want to lose wt but then they don't want to do anything about it.
Do you really think I like not having seconds, or indulgent desserts or sleeping in so I don't have to exercise?
