KIds that Dont Do Homework

I teach 4th grade and do not really give much homework. I have a boy in my class that hardly ever does his homework. I do keep in in for recess but he doesnt seem to care. His mom has the attitude that its really my problem and I can keep him in whenever I want. She doesnt want to deal with it. How do you handle situations like this?

nice parent you got there ..... this is why her kid does nothing because she backs him up. i might try some sort of reward system with him. it's not fair you to lose your prep. time and a 4th grader does need recess. i would also document any conversations you have had with the mother about this and perhaps your principal or someone can help you get her on board.

this happens to me too often. i work in a school where lack of parent involvement is a big problem. i contact the parent in writing, then by phone, then i try to schedule a meeting in person (with an AP if possible). and i document all my attempts. after that i don't do a whole lot. we are not allowed to keep students back from lunch or any other activity (like gym or music) to do homework. sometimes i just feel like my hands are completely tied.
