Getting a job in a school (or day care)...

Ok, I NEED to get out of this job, and I would love to try to work with kids again. Of course, I don't have a teaching a degree or anything but I thought about trying to get a job in the office of an elementary school might be more doable until I can get recent experience. How would I go about seeing what's out there? Do I have to take a civil service test or something? I've looked on a few sites, but it seems so confusing Chat Icon

I am assuming that to actually work w/the kids, as a TA or something, I'd need a child-oriented degree?

I'm also thinking about day cares or nursery schools... again, all of my experience was quite a few years ago, and though I did major in early childhood and family studies in college, I ended up w/a liberal studies degree. So.... I don't have lots of qualifications. Chat Icon How hard would it be to get some sort of assistant job? All I see is part time, anyway, but you never know.

I am so regretting changing majors and getting stuck in this job! It was ok for awhile but now it's killing me!!!! I'll take a pay cut, I just want to be happy in my job and feel like i'm actually making a difference in someone's life again!!!

Ok, sorry, any help would be appreciated! Chat Icon

you do have to take a civil service test to be a secretary in the schools...keep your eyes on your county's test dates.

to be a TA you need to take a state exam and have certain college credits.

to be an aide/monitor, I believe you just need to have fingerprints taken

My daycare is always hiring - you need a degree to be head teacher at our center, but not for asst teachers. They are in the Huntington area.

I've thought about this as well. My original major was education, but I changed it. I have my MSW though. Any tips?

Nah, those jobs are extremely hard to come by. Same for school SW.

Guidance counselors don't have MSWs, we have an MS in School Counseling. Somewhat different coursework, different internship, different NYS certification.

Look at Idealist.org to find volunteer work (for your resume) and job opportunities. Or try www.nais.org for jobs in private schools - they don't always ask for a specific degree or certification. Good luck!

Don't want to continue to jack this thread, but everyone I know on Long Island who went for guidance counseling is unemployed, or underemployed. I have no plans to go back to school for another degree, owing the school debt I owe, with a child on the way. Volunteering is not an option either. I need to bring in income.
