Getting over the Hurdle of being Un-fit

Let me explain my situation.. I want to get healthy and fit. BUT... at the gym and even home I am having such issues really getting into a work out routine.

I dont want to give up and just live life as I have, but mentally I am not there! How did you jump that hurdle, and switch your thinking?

I am going through the same thing right now. I set a weekly goal for myself to work out at least 3 times a week and I try to listen to my body when I am at the gym. If I get really tired, I stop. I have to keep reminding myself that I need to give my body a chance to get back into working out. If I push too much, I'll get sore and give up

I noticed that I did well when I had someone to work out with, it was great motivation and it was fun to bounce ideas off each other on how to switch our workout up.

I've been thinking about going back to the gym but I can't seem to get any of my friends to want to come with me Chat Icon Chat Icon

Thanks for the advise. I feel like it is mental. I see people at the gym gasping for air and sweating bullets and i want to be like them, I guess I just need to really get to the point where i push myself.

Is it possible to get a trainer? Even just a few sessions can really give you a kick start, just to see what you need to do to get yourself to that gasping for breath point.
Sometimes it helps to also write down what you are going to do, or keep a journal, makes it easier to stick to the plan and takes out the guess work once you get there.
Take it one day at a time, today is all that matters. If you are one a machine - save NOTHING! Your last reps should be HARD, almost impossible, it's not gonna bulk you up, I promise.
Hang in there and good luck!

I totally understand how you feel. I absolutely HATE to work out and I KNOW that unless I do I will not loss the last 12lbs that I want to.

This works for me....i get up everyday and say
"Just for today I am going to make time to work out / exercise for 10 minutes!!" how long is ten minutes really??? So... Once I get on the treadmill or my WII fit and 10 minutes blows by I stay for another 10 and then another pretty soon I have a 45 minute work out in and BLAMO I am done for the day.

I have been doing this every single day since the new year and so far I have only skipped 1 day last week when I was so sick.

It may sound silly but so far it is working!!!
Good luck if you need a workout sounding board feel free to FM me

This is really helpful. Thank you. It is almost like I don't know how far to push myself- I get myself to the gym and work., but not I guess as hard as I could. I think it may be partly because I know how out of shape I am.

Thank you!!!

Thanks for your 'tool' you use to modivate yourself. That may help, if I say, "one more rep, lap, step...etc". I guess it is about forcing myself to do more.

First of all you should be patting yourself on the back for even GETTING to the gym and making some sort of effort even though you are not really into it right now. So kudos to you for recognizing that you need to make fitness a priority in your life to achieve the change you are looking for!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Next I would stop worrying about what others are doing and take the time to focus on yourself. One man's marathon is another man's mile. Half the battle is getting there, the other half is making YOUR time worth it.

If you think you are not working intense enough step it up! Get your hands on a heart rate monitor and make sure that you when you are doing cardio you are ALWAYS working out at 65-85% of your maximal heart rate (maximal heart rate = 220 minus your age). You don't have to be running 7 miles an hour to achieve this! Don't be intimidated by thinking you need to do what everyone else is doing. Do what YOU like to do. If it's the elliptical, make sure you are working hard enough and in that target heart rate zone - raise the intensity level. If you can't run but like to walk raise the incline on that treadmill and work it out! If you are taking a workout class just don't go through the motions, make each move count and always give it your best. Visualize where you want to be during your workouts and push through it. You CAN do whatever you set your mind to!

I promise you it DOES get easier with time. I did not always love working out. I did not always love the gym. Now if I miss even if I miss a day or two I don't feel right. Give it time. Develop the habit. Set small goals for yourself and the greatest reward will be when you achieve them.

Good luck!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Wow,, that is some inspiring and useful words! Thank you so much.
I guess I should really focus on myself and not to what others are doing.
