Snacks before workouts - help!!!

I realized why I'm crapping out.

I tend to do my workout around 7-ish

I am so good about eating during the day to keep up my energy - I graze every 2 hours, but the last time I eat something is around 3 or 3:30. then I drive to an evening session in someone's home, on the road to get Cailen by 5 or so, pick him up between 5:30-6:00, drive home, wait for DH to come home, or if DH is home already get ready, and then I'm in the gym by 7-7:30

That means the last time I ate was 3-4 hrs before my workout (not to mention I am not eating DURING the workout! Chat Icon )

So, instead of being so hard on myself, I took a closer look into what I'm doing.

DH thinks I should have this sport mix drink that he uses before a workout. I hate sport drinks (it's a special one with not a lot of sugar, but still....)

Can you share your pre-workout snacks with me? How long before the w/o do you eat it?

TIA ladies!!! Chat Icon

Re: Snacks before workouts - help!!!

I'm a morning worker-outer, so this may not help.. BUT..here goes...

I get up t 6:05, get on the train at 6:25, have half of a granola bar (Quaker "less sugar") around 6:50, and I'm at the gym around 7:20 (assuming the train Gods are with me). That 55 calories gets me through my workout, and I usually have a banana within 20 hours of finishing.

I workout in the AM too...and don't eat anything unless I am running 12+ miles.

But when I do eat before my workout, I eat about 60 minutes prior. Usually a half a banana and english muffin with a tiny bit of peanut butter or butter spray.

I'm better with real food than I am with energy bars and stuff...those give me cramps.

usually a snack bar. or some type of 100 calorie workout. if i do long runs then i usually will have a snack every hour during my workout.

it does stink b/c u feel like your always hungry. by the time i would get back at night. it is too late to eat. so your
starving by the morning.

Re: Snacks before workouts - help!!!

I much prefer to work out in the mornings. I don't eat before a morning work out. But dh claimed mornings for his work outs. It annoys me. This wouldn't be an issue but after being up At 5 with Cailen, taking care of him in the morning, driving and working all day, etc, I am exhausted At night and need that pick up. I am tempted to just get a coffee to tell you the truth....

I also work out in the morning! Sorry! Chat Icon

I like to have carbs and protein before I exercise. I eat as soon as I wake up and work out about an hour later. I usually have cereal with milk, oatmeal with some egg whites or an egg/egg white omelet and a light bagel.

After working out I like to have a Luna bar but I would think that would be good beforehand too.

Have you tried muscle milk? I really like it! It's like chocolate milk. 100 calories, 3g of fat, 15g of protein and actually filling believe it or not! It's good for on the go and I drink that in the afternoons if I've had a tough workout in the morning.

Another option is a slice of whole grain toast with PB.

I used to not be able to eat before a workout but now I HAVE to. I don't think a cup of coffee will be enough Liza.

I work out mid-day. I eat breakfast then I have, one hour before I workout, a low-fat yogurt - NOT fat free...too much sugar and no fat so it is not filling...or a luna bar. You could do granola or peanut butter on whole wheat bread. Ummm...sometimes I have an apple wiht peanut butter...just trying to think here. For you, the easiest would be a Luna or Cliff bar, peanut butter sandwich, something like that.

You dont eat anything after 3:30? what about dinner? Do you eat late, like after the gym?

I'd eat a banana or an apple when your home before the gym. Or, maybe a low fat yogurt or drink a glass of skim milk.

No, I eat dinner after my workout when I get home - I always have a healthy, light dinner!
