How to get a copy of lab results?
I've been on hold with Labcorp FOREVER although I just read their site and it says they do not provide results to an individual. Problem is, my son had a test done in October and his doctor said she never received the results and is basically too busy to get them (whole other post, and obviously we won't see her again). So HOW do I get a copy of the result? Can they legally NOT have to give *me* a copy?

I thought they had to give you a copy especially if you request one.
I would stick it out on hold...

That's what I thought too. I finally got through and they gave me a phone number to some HIPPA office through their organization where I got a voicemail. Hopefully they call back.

Print the HIPPAA form from the Court website and send it to them, they will give it you then
ETA: As long as someone has this form, they have to give it to you. That's how we get them.

Re: How to get a copy of lab results?
Well someone called me back from their HIPPA compliance office and said it's NYS law that lab results can only be released to a physician. He said he would send them to her again and then by law she has to provide me with a copy if I request it (which of course I will). Such a PITA.

That's not true. I get them for work all the time....AND from Quest and Labcorp, NOT the doctor

They often tell me that they will not provide the information directly, even with a HIPAA compliant release form. I have threatened to send a subpoena and I usually do not have to get a subpoena after that.

I actually think that this might be correct that they can't release to you b.c it is a lab not an MD's office. So a MD is supposed to interpret the results. I would follow up with both them AND the doctors office to make sure they DO send it and that they DO receive then I would insist that the MD's office release a copy to you (you will need the HIPPA form to get it from them or a letter requesting they release the records). I would continue to call the old MD and insist they comply with getting the records that is sloppy at best and poor IMO to send a patient for labs and NOT follow up on them. Do you have a new DR that can try to get them from the lab?

I think though that is b/c you are getting them in the case of a lawsuit then they are required to provide them - but I think in an individuals case they are not supposed to send them to the patient b.c they are supposed to be interpreted by a Dr. That was what I remember hearing at my old job.

Well, you may be right, but I know when I worked solely in med mal, if the hospital was being slow, we'd have the patient get them with the authorization, so I do know it is possible!
