FYI or Any Info? NYC Hiring Freeze
I just heard from my principal that NYC openings must be filled by the teacher's in reserve first--- up to a certain amount. So, although we are posting openings, she might have to hire within.

From what I understand they aren't hiring anyone "new" to the doe. I know there is a ton of excessing going on. Yesterday my school excessed 20 teachers.

And yet Teach For America is telling its 2009 corps members that they will "likely" have spots in September- Nicrae- I feel for your colleagues who were excessed. I really hope they are able to find positions elsewhere in the system.
I am wondering if TFA knows something we don't about a buyout for the most senior people. I know in my school that we will be getting at least 3 new classes- but my principal does not know how he'll staff them because I don't think he has money for anyone new.

One of our AP's found a new job and they aren't replacing her. Instead they are making a teacher a "coordinator" and giving her a reduced class load. Our principal says the the leaving AP's salary will save a job or two. It is really tight right now money wise.

Hiring freeze is still in effect, but schools are not restricted to hiring ATR's. The newly-opened small schools are exempt, and can hire whoever they want.

My district union rep was at my school yesterday and she shared with us that no new employees can be hired until all those in excess have been place. There may be an exception based on liscense...for example if no ESL teacher is in excess they will hire a new one. HTH
