deviated septum surgery + adenoids
Has anyone had surgery to fix their deviated septum and have their adenoids removed?
Looks like i might have to have that done in a few months.
just wondering how painful it is or what the recovery is like?

I had a septoplasty done a few yrs ago to fix my deviated septum. I didn't have my adenois removed but they reduced my turbinates inside my nasal passages since they were enlarged causing me to snore (loud, according to hubby). It honestly wasn't terrible. It was ambulatory surgery, had general anesthesia, went home after I could keep down some gingerale/crackers and peed. The worst part was all the nasal packing in my nose-slept horribly the first night since I felt like I couldn't breathe, I had the packing removed by the surgeon the next morning and take some painkillers before hand because that hurt like hell!!! But afterwards the pain was minimal and I felt fine after a few days.

my dh had a septoplasty in march of 2007, he was in pain right after the surgery and did not sleep well for a few nights while the packing was in
The ENT doctor told him to take 2 vicodins before he went for the packing to be removed...once he had the packing removed (which WAS painful but quick) he felt MUCH better

Ugh! Well as long as its a quick removal of the packing.  I'm sure i've been through worse. 
Anything is better than have constant problems all winter.

Just this past March I had my deviated septum fixed, nasal polyps removed and my turbinates reduced.
It was the best thing I've ever done. Honestly it was a lot easier than I was anticipating. I expected lots of headaches, pain, being hunched over in a fetal position crying, etc but it wasnt too bad. I took only 3 Vicodin, and that was really only because I had them.  I was fine with Extra Strength tylenols.
I had both packing and stents. Considering I was 100% blocked with nasal polyps, the packing wasn't that much of a big deal to me. I couldnt breathe thru my nose for the 4 years prior so no being able to breathe thru my nose for a weekend wasn't a big deal (I had sugery on a Friday.) Packing came out that Monday, and the stents came out a week later. There was just what felt like swelling and pressure.
I agree with everyone's prior messages. Take a pain pill an hour before you go for your packing removal. It doesn't hurt per say, it just feels 'weird'. If you're sqeemish, close your eyes and breathe, it will be over before you know it. Me, not being sqeemish watched the whole extraction. I won't give you any details.  After a while you will get used to them poking up there with the tools. I joke I could jam a fire hose up there now and not complain.
My only suggestions, (and I'm not sure if they would apply to you since you're not having the other 2 parts of the surgery I did) are to remember that bending over will be difficult for a while. For about 2 weeks bending was a bad idea for me; head would pound, bleeding, lightheaded, etc. So keep that in mind. The other thing was sleeping arrangements. Since you're all plugged up, its better if you sleep in a semi-sitting position; it keeps things flowing better. I slept in a recliner in the living room for a month, before slowly starting to transition to the bed (chair for 6 hours, bed for 2, and then slowly increasing bed portion). Other thing I figured out too late was that caffiene(sp?) was bad. It caused a lot of head pounding.
If I push up on the tip of my nose, I feel a little pressure; Dr said thats from fixing the deviated septum. I also have a little pimple on the inside of my nostril, again he said that the incision and should go away eventually. Even if those 2 things don't go away, I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Oh i'm not the squeemish type.
I have a 1 year old and i work FT, so i'm just curious how long i'll be out for. Did you take time off work?
I'll definitely keep that in mind about the caffeine. I'll have to wean myself off of it before i get the surgery. 
So other than the whole non breathing thing , were you getting sinus infections all the time?

If you want to know the squeemish details, FM me, I don't want to gross out everyone.
I took a week off of work; I had surgery Friday afternoon and was back the second Monday. But in reality I probably could have went back on Wednesday. (I had carry over time from last year, and it was use it or lose it so I used it.) I work in computers, so for the most part I'm on my azz all day long so it would really be no different than being home on the computer. If you are doing a non-desk job, you might be different. The only annoying part was that my doctor brought me back for a lot of followups - that is also why I took the full week off, easier to schedule appts. I had surgery on Friday; back to the drs office on Monday (packing removal), Weds (checkup) and then Friday (stents, 1 week mark). Then I had a month of 1 appointment per week; then a month of 1 appointment every 2 weeks; and now I've graduated to every 3 months for the first year.  Luckily no copays for the surgery followups, so I know he's not milking me for my copay but really wants to check on my progress.
I was a constant sinus infection. They estimated that I had a sinus infection for about 2 years straight, but some points being way worse than others. They would put me on steroids and antibiotics which would clear it up while I was on the drugs - but literally 3 days after the drugs were done I was back with an infection. For the last 6 months before surgery, at least 2 times a week I would come home from work and go directly to bed because the pressure was too much, from everything being 'stuck' up there.
They might ask you to also use a sinus rinse once the packing is out, so if you haven't acclimated yourself to doing that you might want to get used to it before surgery. My dr's orders was to rinse 4x per day; to prevent crusting. Any crusting that happens they need to suction out, and that is uncomfortable. So you definetly want to keep up with the rinses if they tell you to.

Okay one more question.
My ENT doctor wants to see how things go first but i have yet another sinus infection so i'm pushing for the surgery.
Did you have black eyes afterwards?

Day 1 I had a gauze moustache.
