Tubes in ears and Adenoids
I took Jordana to the ENT after having fluid in her ears for the past six months- (that I know of)- but no ear infection, and he wants to put tubes in her ears. I was prepared for that. He also wants to look at her adenoids while he is "in there" and if they are big, he wants to take them out.
Does anyone have experience with this? I see Dr. Voight in Manhattan.
Thanks.

Re: Tubes in ears and Adenoids
Mikayla is having the same surgery on 6/26
from what the ENT doctor told me, if they are older than 2, normally recurrent ear infections are due to enlarged adenoids and the normal course of action is to remove them at the same time as they place the tubes. I will let you know how the surgery goes in 2 weeks

Re: Tubes in ears and Adenoids
DS - and I use the term D b/c its the only term in this case - has had an ear infection from Thanksgiving to Christmas, the 1 per month from Jan-May. Hopefully we are good for a while.
Since DS is only 16 months now they won't do the surgery.
What exactly are adenoids?

Re: Tubes in ears and Adenoids
DS had tubes put in and his adenoids removed at the same time back in May. He was 20 months. The Dr said that his adenoids were so big that they weren't allowing his sinuses to drain and since the surgery his coughing has stopped and he has gotten one cold that actually ended on its own without antibiotics (that never happened before!).
I've heard that the tubes are no big deal, but because of the adenoid removal I do have to warn you that your DD will not be herself for the first week. After a week the scab will fall off (kind of gross) and she will feel much better.
That first week was rough for all of us but now I am glad that we did it. Doing them both at the same time means only having to put DC under anesthesia once.
I also wanted to mention that DS barely ate anything for that first week but did drink lots of milk.
FM me if you have questions.
HTH and good luck!

Re: Tubes in ears and Adenoids
See, DD never had an ear infection in her life. But she has constant fluid.

Re: Tubes in ears and Adenoids
My DD had tubes put in her ears at 9 months old. When she was 2.5 she started to run really high fevers every month it seemed and they couldn't figure out what was causing them after many tests including bloodwork. Her WBC count was always elevated but they couldn't figure out why. Fast forward 6 months, she woke up with a VERY enlarged gland in her neck and infected tinsils. After a month of treatment and little improvement they decided it would be best to take out her tonsils and adenoids. Apparently her adenoids were in horrible, horrible shape. The Dr. feels that this is what was causing her fevers and they couldn't diagnose it because they can't see them when looking in your mouth. Anyway, so at 3 yo old DD had the surgery and has not been sick since. 9Knoocking on wood). She turned 4 in April. FM if you have any questions.

Re: Tubes in ears and Adenoids
this is from someone who wished they had there adnoids taken out as a kid - enlarged adnoids lead to mouth breathing (snoring included but not always) which leads to the lower jaw growing bigger than the upper jaw - the only way to ever repair thatis to break the bottom jaw - something i know if i want my teeth straight is in my future - and i have had sinus problems my entire life
but i grew up in a time when they were not removing tonsils and adnoids - they do not like to take them out of adults
eta - also enlarged adnoids can be a cause for night terrors

Re: Tubes in ears and Adenoids
My friend's daughter had her adenoids removed & had tubes in her ears. I know it made a significant difference in her sleeping, which then eased a lot of the meltdowns. She had trouble sleeping because she wouldn't breathe.

Re: Tubes in ears and Adenoids
Both my boys had the tubes done, not the adenoids. It was the BEST thing we did for my boys.
