ADHD?

what do you do with/for/about a kid that absolutely cannot control himself due to ADHD? he is unmedicated and unruly! how can i make his day (my class's and mine too) better?

I teach self contained special ed and have a few kids with attention problems and/or hyperactivity.

I let them use their energy in a positive way by giving them jobs that require them to get up frequently throughout the day. (handing out papers/materials, etc)

I also learned to what to 'expect' from them. Of course I am working with them on channeling their energy in other ways and sitting through an entire lesson, focusing the whole time, etc...... but I learned to just assume that for right now, they will not be perfect.

I had the same kids last year and we made SOOOOO much progress by June! Unfortunately I think the summer of no structure contributed to them losing their stamina for focusing for extended periods of time. At least I know what they are capable of and I remind them of that.

You might want to also buddy up one of the more hyperactive kids with a more mellow student. Maybe the two could balance each other out and help each other!!

i teach 4th. its totally out of control. today we had "back to school" during the day (with the kids in the classroom) and he was totally off the wall. all of the parents were staring at him. i felt so bad.
