chromosomal testing after D&C

If you had the chromosomal testing done, did your doc tell if it was male or female?

My OB/GYN just told me that the testing was normal (no chromosomal issue), so I had the results sent over to Dr. B. and he explained the results to me and ended up telling me the sex of the baby. He felt bad afterward not knowing how we would feel about knowing the sex.

I ended up calling my sister after my appt and told her everything. She was more upset after finding out the sex, saying that it made it a little more real.

It didn't bother me at first, but know I keep thinking about it.

Just wondering your thoughts.

Re: chromosomal testing after D&C

I had the D&C after the meds didn't work so the only thing really that hung around was "female tissue" so it didn't tell me anything...

I'm not sure how I would feel or if knowing that would make me feel worse...thats a tough one.

i'm sorry if it made you feel worse. Personally I am not sure anything else could make me feel worse than I already felt...try to take the new info with a grain of salt....

Yes, my doctor told me. I think she kinda did it on accident. She was reading from my chart and telling me what the findings were and she said "male fetus". My heart sank. It def made it much more real. Chat Icon

Re: chromosomal testing after D&C

I found out the "sex" but it was complicated. The embryo had an entire extra set of X chromosomes and was 69 XXY instead of 46 XX or 46 XY.
I was extremely upset because I felt like the baby was not really boy or girl. I know that technically it was a boy because it had a Y chromosome, but the egg could have been fertilized by an X sperm, then a Y or the opposite, or it was an XX egg fertilized by an Y sperm.

I felt very cheated because I actually did want to know the sex. DH did not want to know the sex. As time has gone on, I really just think about the baby I lost in "spirit".

I think that your feelings are completely normal and I understand how painful it can be Chat Icon

I asked not to know what sex the materials were, I wasn't interested in knowing and I was not interested in carrying around for my whole life what could have been. I am very happy with my decision.

They told me the sex for the m/c i had at 15 weeks because I had to go to the L&D unit to deliver. They also gave me the option to spend time and see him afterwards, which I declined... couldnt' bring myself to face that....

It does make it more real knowing the sex. But that said, I would want to know, as if it comes up a normal female, I was told it was inconclusive, as it could be your own tissue, so given that, I would want to know.

The doctor didn't tell us, but I did ask when he met with the genetic counselors.

The first m/c I was around 6 or 7 weeks, and I was not told of the sex.
The second m/c I was almost 11 weeks.

Re: chromosomal testing after D&C

I had a chemical pregnancy so it was still far too early to know the sex. Thank God for that. I know that it would have broken my heart to know it's gender. I feel like in my case, the baby really didn't even get the chance to develop. That makes me feel better too. Sounds strange, but it almost makes it 'less real'. I dunno Chat Icon

Re: chromosomal testing after D&C

Yes, after both m/c's the doc told us the sex.

ETA: both m/c's were around 8 weeks.
