HSG Question...

My obgyn said that if I don't get a BFP in the next 2-3 months she will send me to a specialist who would do an HSG.

My question - have most people here been referred out for that test, or have your OBGYN's done them? My OBGYN said that she won't do it , bec if I eventually go to a RE that will request a new one anyway. (and that it is not something i will want to do twice).

What do you guys think?

Re: HSG Question...

My new OBGYN referred me for a HSG. Truthfully, I wish I had this test done sooner!! It would of saved me a lot of time and grief.

ETA: it turned out that my left tube is blocked (hydrosalpinx.....which means fluid filled) and my right is undetermined at this time.

I would demand that you want one. Or go straight to a RE. How old are YOu? How long have you been TTC?

Also, I was referred soon after my HSG. My only regret is that I didn't go to a RE sooner!

Re: HSG Question...

I have never heard of an OBGYN that does it. I was sent to a radiologist, and yes, you dont want to do it twice. BUt it is one of the first tests you should do.

On and Off, for two years. Mainly for personal reasons, we weren't as aggressive until now. To make a long story short......moved twice within the year, I was layed off, and DH's got a new job. But, considering my age (35) I should of had a HSG sooner.

Re: HSG Question...

I went to a radiologist also. Its a good test to have done, my RE did it just to make sure my tubes were blocked before we started to TTC.

It also increases conception by 30%.

Re: HSG Question...

Can someone explain what an HSG is? Some kind of sonogram?

Re: HSG Question...

basically they inject die thorugh your cervix and then take xrays to make sure the die is able to get through your tubes. The diffiuclt part is that they blow up a device like a balloon in your cervix to keep the die from spilling out.

Re: HSG Question...

I was referred by my old OBGYN....however, I took the test results (and the exrays) with me to my RE when I started there...never did they suggest I have it done again.

The radiologist injects a dye into your uterus and views the image by xray. If you have clear tubes, the dye will flow right through and out of the fallopian tubes. If there is blockage, the dye will not flow out. However, I have been told that the fallopian tubes might spasm which doesn't allow the fluid to flow. So, it doesn't neccesarily mean you have blocked tubes. Usually, during the procedure, if you have blocked tubes you will experience more pain. You will experience cramping but it is tolerable. As mentioned on this board, some women get PG right after because the dye clears up the tube.
