Re: Advice for Student Teacher

Everyone's first day is different. On my first day, I observed the classes that I wouldl be teaching. Additionally, I graded a few things for my cooperating teacher.

I do not remember what I brought with me, but if I had a student teacher I would suggest that they bring a usb - flash drive and lunch. My school has extra plan books that I could give him/her (This is not the case at every school, however.) Additionally, I would make sure to have gum, lotion, chap stick (the basics)

Re: Advice for Student Teacher

Don't be shy! Ask what you can do from the get-go. Grading papers, doing simple things with the kids (spelling tests, for example) until you know them and the curriculum better, etc. Ask questions--"why do yo udo that?" ask about curriculum and resources etc. BORROW materials and make photocopies or take an extra copy of worksheets or other materials you think may be useful to you in the future.

Many districts have tons of student observers and teachers.... but Initiative is what is going to get you noticed and perhaps might lead to a job.

Re: Advice for Student Teacher

Hi! I just completed my student teaching at a school in Queens. It was a little different for me because I started before the students were in the classroom. I was able to set up the classroom and talk with my cooperating teacher about the things I needed. What I recommend to take is: a note pad, pens, lunch, water.

Be pro-active while you are there. What you put into student teaching is so important. I spent my first few days observing the teacher, talking with students, learning their names. Within a few days I was I was doing "read alouds" and preparing lessons in social studies. It was a wonderful experience and I learned so much about procedure and honed in on my teaching technique. Now I am just waiting for the hiring freeze to be lifted so I can apply for a job.

Good Luck!!!!

Re: Advice for Student Teacher

When I was student teaching we were told by our supervisor from Hofstra to bring a read aloud book for the first day.

In addition to that, I brought a notebook/pen and lunch.

Try to get involved as much as you can and help students who look like they might need it before being asked. You can get so much out of student teaching, even if you don't realize it at the time!
