Getting a student teacher
Is it weird that my administrators asked me if I would mind getting a 2-day a week student teacher next semester, considering I am untenured and new to the school?

Re: Getting a student teacher
Is it a student teacher or an observer?
Either way, I totally think it is weird that they would give you a student teacher. I thought NYS required the coordinating teacher to have their permanent/professional license.

Re: Getting a student teacher
no, my district has asked the same of me. i actually turned them down, thinking i needed more time to hone my craft before i took in a student teacher. i want to be amazing before i let someone in and possibly shape their teaching style.
if it's just an observer, i would be more comfrotable with that then a student teacher, particularly if you're untenured.
they asked because they probably think highly of you-- go for it!

Re: Getting a student teacher
yes that's really weird since you're pretty new yourself! it does happen though because very few people want them.
usually they give them to more experienced teachers. keep in mind you CAN turn it down, don't feel obligated to do it.
when student teachers are good, it's great! when they're not so good,
good luck!

I had one. Sometimes they need a place for the person and you are that place.

Re: Getting a student teacher
I've had so many student teachers/interns (speech and language)! From what I understand, the colleges want tenured teachers and usually the district has the same policy too. However, I've worked in two districts and student teachers in both before tenure.
I think your administrator asking you means that it would be fine for the college and the district. I also think it is a compliment to you. Maybe they are asking you if you mind b/c it is only 2 days per week. It is hard to develop consistency and for the student to get to know your students with such little time/exposure.

Re: Getting a student teacher
I am getting my 3rd student teacher next week. I just hope this one makes it past the first day. My first student teacher the district hired and the 2nd one I had the principal 'let go' after the first day when she stole work from another teacher's room without even asking her---- on the FIRST day. I am hoping this one is better. Especially since she may be my leave replacement when I leave in May.

Re: Getting a student teacher
At my school we can't have a student teacher til we are tenured. Observers are different though. I have a student teacher right now.

Re: Getting a student teacher
I had an observer that was supposed to be teaching small lessons. She was terrible. She refused to teach anything- including calling out items for bingo or going over a simple worksheet. She would say that she was coming in and would not. She would show up and leave and in the end she hands me a paper with all of the "hours" that she completed that I had to sign. It made me very uncomfortable.
