Starting a Home Business
Hey guys. If I wanted to start a sole proprietorship in NYS, what else do I have to do besides the DBA paperwork?
I've been looking online and I'm so confused. I would not have any employees (except myself of course)
In case it matters, this would be for a photography business. I plan on getting insurance as well, but what exactly is required?
Thanks in advance for your help!

Re: Starting a Home Business
I would seriously consider another business form other than a sole proprietership. When running a business, you want the liability protection offered by a corporation or LLC... If you don't know much about this, talk to a lawyer who specializes in small business formation. For a very small fee, you can get some good advice and have someone help you with the paperwork.
Good luck.

IMO I would never open a sole proprietorship. You are personally responsible for any debt that the company incurs. You may think "its just me it wont matter" but it does all the time.
I worked as a collection atty and saw so many people have to file personal bankruptcy because of a solo business they started.
File it with the state as an s-corp......I think you can do it all online and even search for names.

I agree about filing as an s-corp, I meant to mention that in my post as well
