Question about grades...those that give percentages

I have a student that received an 85 1st marking period. I'm in the middle of doing 2nd marking pd grades and she has an average of 99. She has not missed one assignment and has done any extra credit that I've offered. She really has worked hard this marking pd. I feel weird jumping her grade from an 85 to a 99 when it's only the 2nd marking pd....but on the other had she does deserve it. Our system is all computerized....the grades go by 5's until you get to 90 and then it goes up by one (ex: 80, 85, 90, 91, 92, 93....99). Thoughts?

I COMPLETELY understand your hesitation, but I'd feel compelled to give her the grade... especially if it's possible for her to figure out her average. You don't want her (or her parent) complaining that she didn't get the grade she deserved. Not to mention the fact that it's MUCH nicer when they're "surprised" in THIS direction. Chat Icon

I'd give her the 99.

If that's what her average is I would give it. I would never lower it. I try to avoid giving 89s in honors since the parents will call, but I only raise, never lowerChat Icon

If she earned a 99, why would you lower her grade?I would definitely give her what she earned.

It seems like she wasn't satisfied with earning an 85 last marking period and worked really hard to do better. I would give her the 99 she earned.

If she earned a 99, she deserves a 99. I can't imagine changing a grade other than to help out a struggling student.

i completely agree! she earned it and probably worked much harder this semseter, OR the content this semester was easier for her to understand.

if i were a student that earned a 99 average but got even a percentage point lower, i would fight it like crazy.

Re: Question about grades...those that give percentages

The way grades are done where I teach is that they are cumulative.... meaning that every marking period must take into account the previous grades from the entire year so far. So if someone got 85 the first mk pd, and averaged 99 the second, I'd give a grade in the mid-90's since grades are supposed to reflect the entire year's work.

However, if your school doesn't do cumulative grading, then I'd definitely give the student the 99 if they deserve it! When I was in school, if I got a grade that was lower than my actual average, I'd be so upset!
