Re: Puppies?

It's kind of difficult to find a puppy to adobt. Most "shelter" dogs are usually 2 years +. Try doing a search on PetFinder.com.

Re: Puppies?

I would go to North Shore on a crappy weekday. We found our first dog there one a rainy miserable thurs evening. We had gone numerous times before but it was always crowded and we felt rushed. That day it was empty and we had plenty of time to get to know all the dogs. We wound up with a puppy and they had plenty there. We weren't set on a speific breed we choose Dottie by her personality and demeaner. If you want a specific breed, I would try pet finder or breed specific rescues.

I'd keep checking in on the local shelters, but definitely try Petfinder.

Re: Puppies?

There are so many shelters on Long Island, but I would check out the Town of Hempstead first simply b/c you'll be getting a dog and saving a life...they are a kill shelter and that makes my heart hurt

Re: Puppies?

I got my one small dog from a rescue group in the city...they specialize in smaller dogs...they are usually not puppies but they are worth a shot...we love our dog we got from them (the tan one in the pic)

Re: Puppies?

Please whatever you do, be careful when adopting from North Shore....My husband and I adopted a puppy from there a few months ago that ended up having canine distemper.

We were told after we unfortunately had to put her to sleep (and while we were absolutely devastated) that adopting a sick dog "is the risk you take when you adopt from a shelter"

The truth is that North shore brings puppies in from all over the country and doesn't do the right thing by them. They rely on spotty vaccination records and don't quarantine their dogs like ALL other shelters. Two different employees told me that the process of bringing in their shipments of dogs is "like a factory and some dogs slip through the cracks"

We've been heartbroken over this and the only thing North Shore has offered has been a replacement dog.

Little Shelter, Bideawee, and kent all do right by their animals and quarantine for their own protection and prospective adopters. FM if you want any additional information. Good luck!
