Cub Scouts
Let me premise this by saying that I grew up in Brooklyn and all the cub scout troops were run through the various schools/religious congregations.
Now, that I am on LI, I was wondering how one chooses which troop for the kids. Should I send him to the nearest troop, which is run out of a different religious group than ours? Or do I send him to the one that is run by our religious organization, which is still close but not as close as the other one? Does it really make any difference?

Same here.
We haven't done cub scouts but i think it's better to do through the school so they're forging friendships there.

On LI most Cub Scout Packs are chartered through religious organizations. Our town has 3 Cub Scout Packs. When DS was joining we looked into the two that were closest to us. You should be able to speak to the Cubmaster and or the Committee Chair about the pack. I would look at:
* Their calendar of events
do they have activities outside of pack nights
*The size of the pack on LI - a good size pack is 50 -75
* What do they expect of you? Cub Scouts is a family activity and lots of volunteers are needed to keep it going.
* What is the cost to register and what does it cover?

I'm a Den Leader for DS's Pack. Many packs aren't affiliated with a religious organization. Many are sponsored by fire departments (the pack and troop I was in growing up was), community groups (DS's Pack is sponsored by the Sons of the American Legion), etc.
Also, even if a pack is sponsored by a religious group, all religions are welcome in the pack. The meetings may be held in the church hall, but the boys aren't required to go to that church every week.....
Like PP said, it's usually best to go to the one that DS's classmates go to, which is what DS is doing.

not all religions - just the monotheistic religions (Christianity, Judaism and I would assume Islam)

These are the official Cub Scout religious awards that you can earn as a Cub Scout. (but not the only recognized religions) Since there is an official award given out by the organization, I'm assuming they welcome those religions:

Baden Powell explicitly wanted to include all religions, as long as a belief in a higher power was involved.

In contrast to the Christian-only Boys' Brigade, which started two decades earlier, Robert Baden-Powell founded the Scout movement as a youth organisation (with boys as 'Scouts' and girls as 'Guides'), which was independent of any single faith or religion, yet still held that spirituality and a belief in a higher power were key to the development of young people.
The World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM) states the following in Fundamental Principles:
Under the title "Duty to God", the first of the above-mentioned principles of the Scout Movement is defined as "adherence to spiritual principles, loyalty to the religion that expresses them and acceptance of the duties resulting therefrom". Note that, by contrast to the title, the body of the text omits the word "God" to make clear that the clause also covers non-monotheistic religions, such as Hinduism, and those that do not recognize a personal God, such as Buddhism.
I would still say to select the pack that has many of DS's classmates, and practice your religion as you see fit, and work within your religious beliefs in the pack.
No matter which pack/troop you decide to join, I definitely think it's a good activity to join, and will teach DS many good and useful things.

What grade does this start in? DH was a Boy Scout but I am not sure about it since we are atheists. Not sure when we have to discuss this by, since they are starting school in the fall, LOL.
