Getting discouraged
I defended my dissertation in late March and officially received my PhD. in late May, and still am unemployed. I've applied to over 60 jobs and nothing, not even a call back for an interview.
It's hard because I'm leaving science and want to either get into publishing or education and public outreach, but I only have research skills, and some event planning but only what I did as a grad student.
I just wanted to vent. DH applied to over 100 jobs before getting his current position, but he got a ton of interviews. I've gotten none. I don't know if the problem was that I was living in MD and applying to jobs in NY. I have since moved and I am hoping that living in NY will help my chances.
Any insights?

Re: Getting discouraged
Sounds like you may be over qualified. With a PhD, should come extra $ and some employers don't want to shell it out. I hope you get hired soon, someone is bound to recognize the value of your education. Best wishes

Re: Getting discouraged
I work in higher ed., and it's just that the field is swamped. We have a hiring freeze for all positions; tenure-track, admin, etc. There are so many PhDs graduating, and hardly anyone is being offered teaching positions, and so they are applying for other jobs. I've had many PhDs apply for $30,000 a year admin jobs just to have something to pay the bills. It's just a bad, bad year. Good luck.

Yeah, I may be at that point soon. I never wanted below $40,000, as that is the going rate of a post doc and I should get at least that. But I guess it is better to be employed than to have nothing. We can live on DH's salary alone, but I WANT to work. I am so bored at home. I hate not having my own money. Doing my dissertation work, I found that I was happiest when I had a full, productive day at work. So it is for my happiness as much as it is for money.

Re: Getting discouraged
perhaps while you're looking, try finding volunteer oppty's that will give you experience in the field you want to switch to. I would even try for an internship if you can afford it. right now it seems you need hands-on experience if you want to go for something outside of your field.
or, is there anything research oriented you can do in your desired industry? you must have great statistical and analytical skills. perhaps some sort of analyst? I don't know, just brainstorming...
