Random Thought... Do you dress like a 12 yr old?!?

I've been to numerous weddings and other formal events this year and its beginning to irk me that alot of the dresses I wear are what younger girls are wearing... Do I have to go the frumpy/unsexy route to not look like the 12 yr olds?!?! I mean, even their freakin shoes are sexy and "older looking" !

Anyone else take notice of this?

Re: Random Thought... Do you dress like a 12 yr old?!?

I've noticed that young girls are dressing wayyyyyyy too maturely for their ages. This comming from a chick who used to love to wear minis and midriffs. But its next level now; I was at Green Acres mall last weekend and there's a store there that sells really, really REALLY trashy dresses. I mean worse than Frederick's if that's possible!

So it's not you per se, I think its them and what they're wearing.

FTR I don't dress like them; I wear appropriate black cocktail dresses (not open down to my navel or backless!!!) or formal long gowns that a 35 year old should wear. With sexy heels but NOT over the top!

Re: Random Thought... Do you dress like a 12 yr old?!?

So funny you phrased it like that....A couple of weeks ago, DH said to me, "Why are you dressed like a 12 year old?" I think I was wearing leggings with a long shirt. I used to work in a high school, and found myself either owning clothes that the students were wearing, or thinking, "ooh, I like that, I wonder where she got it". For formal events, I've never matched an outfit that a teenager was wearing, but I guess it could happen! I recently asked some friends when we're supposed to switch to the "Older women" clothes....I don't think any of us are ready!! I do have a friend who is 28 and dresses totally FRUMPY, and even DH notices, so it's pretty bad. I'm guessing she shops in the Misses dept. or something, but she just looks awkward because she is way too young to look that way! I like the junior clothes, and stores like American Eagle and Aeropostale, and I'll wear them for as long as I can being that they fit and look appropriate. I don't wear the short dresses or anything that LOOKS like it's made for a teenager. I think this is a tough age for knowing where we fit in with clothes!

I agree with your DH, sometimes I feel like the legging trend is harder to pull off without looking like a teen.

I also have a friend who dresses really classy/borderline frumpy and has since HS. (ex: we all wore pastel sparkly chiffon/organza prom dresses, she wore a black and white dress that was pretty classic. on 4th of july one year we all wore those super short skirts that were in style and she wore a wool below-the-knee skirt and looked wayyy too young to be wearing that! it looked like something for church, not a teen 4th of july beer-B-Q)

I try to dress a little more classic but try to avoid frump!

I totally wear "12yr old" clothes.

Today my outfit was a black shirt, green coat, black leggings, and my black uggs. I totally look like a hs kid.

Re: Random Thought... Do you dress like a 12 yr old?!?

LOL Thanks girls for chiming in! I shop in the juniors section for the most part, but guess Im going to be getting phased out of that! I think it really hit me when I was at my neices bat mitvah and all her friends were totally wearing dresses that i saw when shopping around in the jrs section... their dresses were very similar to mine and it doesnt help that i look young either (im 27, but barely pass for 18 at times Chat Icon )

So I guess next question... where do you girls shop for the "classy, mature" dresses? My BIL's wedding is coming up in Dec and I need to look nice Chat Icon PS: Im house poor so no over the top suggestions please LOL

I'm still totally into jrs but what if you try more upscale stores where the kids probably wouldn't shop b/c they are busy in Forever 21, Mandees, A/X, and Juicy.

On certain days and with certain coupons you can find great deals at Bloomies, Saks, or Nordstroms. I've had a lot of luck finding long fancy gowns at Bloomingdales for between $50 and $150 bucks.

The misses dept doesn't have to be frumpy. I haven't shopped in juniors since I was about 22, because my boobs wouldn't fit into anything there!Chat Icon

Stores like express & NY & co are misses sizes, but not frumpy. Actually I am 34 & I think those stores may be a little too young for me. I do nto dress liek a teenager at all. I try not too dress too frumpy, but some of you would probably think so on certain days.

You have to be careful in Macy's. I have gotten great Tommy Hilfiger Jeans in
the Misses department, but I have also gotten DH's grandmother a mint green sweatshirt with butterflies appliques. Chat Icon

ETA- I shop a lot in places that have discounted department stores brands like Sym's, Filene's basement, Loehmann's, Century 21.

I can usually find things by Calvin Klein & Liz Claiborne especailly for work, that are adult, not frumpy, and not too expensive.

Re: Random Thought... Do you dress like a 12 yr old?!?

dh's friend was checking out a bunch of girls that were hanging out at the coffee shop when we went out the other day. I was like something seems off about them. (mind you we thought there were young but legal) and they were FAR from it!

Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Yes, I have noticed this. I think it's more a statement on the young girls rather than on you. IMO, it's completely appropriate for women to be dressing like that, not KIDS! Chat Icon

ITA. I could have written this myself. We are at the age to dress sexy and dress with the high heels sexy shoes. If the kids are wearing them well..... Reach puberty and maybe you can fill it out properly Chat Icon

I honestly think it is that the 12 year olds are dressing too old for themselves! I don't think we are dressing too young, it's them.
