Dear Mom

Each day since you left has been filled with its own challenges. My first Mother's Day without you was so incredibly difficult. The lack of a Memorial Day barbeque at your home this year left me feeling like something was missing all day. The Labor Day barbeque at Vanessa's house was so completely weird - your seat was empty, but you were thought of, and spoken of so very often that day. Your birthday came and went and the age of 75 was one you never reached. I spent part of that day reminiscing about the 70th birthday party you threw for yourself, and how positively glowing you were that night.

Now here it is Thanksgiving Day . . . only the second one in my entire life I am not spending with you. I'm trying so hard to be thankful for my husband and my child, but my heart is full of sorrow for that which I am missing . . . you. I can clearly hear your voice in my head from last year saying "that's it, I'm not cookin' any more" as you had the year before, and the year before that, and the year before that. I'm trying to find some measure of sunshine in the fact that this year you aren't cooking - but frankly, since you're not, I have NO desire to eat. I have NO desire to socialize, and NO desire to even recognize that today is a holiday. It's YOUR holiday, and you're not here to remind everyone to "get dressed" for your food. You're not here to offer a toast, or to enjoy a pumpkin pie (which I didn't make this year).

I miss you sooooo much mom. I sincerely hope that you are happy wherever you are.
