post-partum hospital experience

I was wondering if the BTDT multiple moms could share their experiences. I had a c-section with DS and will have a repeat c-section for the twins. I was wondering what it is like to be a brand-new mom with twins in the hospital. I know experiences can vary from hospital to hospital, but I was wondering if I could get an idea of what it could be like. When/how do you get to see/hold your babies? Do they bring both babies to you in the middle of the night for feedings? Anything else?

TIA!

Re: post-partum hospital experience

it was really no different than having one baby. I got to see them both right away and then I passed out for a little while after the c-section (just like i did the first time). When I woke up they brought me both babies. I kept both babies in my room with me all day. Since I wasn't EBF I left them in the nursery all night. I needed my sleep so they were fed formula during the night. I kept them in one bassinet when I had them in my room. It was easier to wheel around just one bassinet. I walked around the halls with them a lot, it helped with the c-section pain to have something to lean on while walking. I had a private room, but everyone at my hospital has a private room. Feel free to ask any other questions.

Thanks so much for the info. I am planning on FFing the twins right away, so I guess they can stay in the nursery during the night. I tried BFing DS, but he was tongue-tied and not getting enough to eat so the ped suggested supplementing with formula. I was so stressed during those overnight feedings, and I was stressed thinking about the nurses bring me TWO babies in the middle of the night!

Re: post-partum hospital experience

after i had my C-section at 35 weeks, they both went into the NICU right away. i did get to see them when they brought them over to me for like 2 min.
i was then in recovery for a few hours because i did have twins. i was dying to see them. it was torture.
they wheeled me down to the NICU where both of them were.. so i spent some time there.. then i had to go to my room.. and was there the rest of the night.
the next day one of my kids was out of the NICU and in the room with me everyday , it was great!
my other DS was in the NICU for the whole stay and more. it was hard.. but we kept visiting him as much as we can!

Re: post-partum hospital experience

I had a planned c-section at 37 weeks and was able to see the babies within a few hours of delivery. I had GD and they had to monitor their blood sugars before they could leave the nursery. I was bottle feeding so they stayed in the nursery at night and in the morning they came in. It was nice getting some sleep at night! They both came home with me after the normal stay.

Re: post-partum hospital experience

I had a c-section at 37 wks and I saw both babies right away for a few mins and then they were brought to the NICU since I had GD and they had to monitor their sugar levels. I had them at 11:45 pm and I was brought to a room around 7:30am. DS got released around 3:00pm that day (a little longer than expected) and he came right in the room with me and DH took me to the NICU to see DD (she later got released to the step up NICU that afternoon so I was able to go in and see her more that day), she got released the next evening so they would bring both babies to me in the morning and they spent the day with us like any normal singleton delivery and they went back to the nursery and since I was FFing they kept them overnight. We all went home together after the normal c-section stay...I gave birth late Saturday night and we went home Thursday morning. They did move me to a room that stayed private until my last two nights there, I was the last room they put a roommate in so they did try to keep me private as long as possible, which was very kind but I couldn't wait to get out of there!!

Thanks so much for the replies. It is so great to hear that even if your babies had to go to the NICU, they did wonderfully! Reality is beginning to set in... I am nervous but SO excited to hold my little ducklings Chat Icon

Re: post-partum hospital experience

My babies had to go to the NICU, but when we were in the delivery room I got to see them. They brought DD over quick before they took her to the NICU and DS they brought over for a few minutes, I gave him a kiss and they took him.
I was in recovery for 8 hrs (pre=eclampsia) and I coudln't sleep. My nurse kept telling me to res but I just couldn't. She was wonderful though. She called the NICU a few times to check on the babies for me and the resident from the NICU came in to talk to me 2 times. DH was allowed to go see them....he went once after I begged him to go check on tem..... but didn't want to go again without me.
They took me to the NICU on the way up to my room so I got to see them and then I went to my room and finally slept a little.
I had no roomate in the beginning and then after that they brought in another mom whose baby was in the NICU.

The nurses on the floor where great about getting me a wheelchair the first day and helping me down to the NICU, calling there and anything else I needed.
