New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience

I know this information would help me & a number of other girls.

Could you please post what hospital you delivered at and what your experience was like.

How was your room? Could you get a private room?

Were you made to feel comfortable?

How were visiting hours handled?

Were you brought your baby right away?

Were the nurses helpful?

ETC.

Thanks so much.

Re: Post your hospital delivery/care experience

Hospital: Stony Brook

How was your room? I was on the high risk floor 1st, then labor and deivery, then Maternity floor...all 3 rooms were private...(except you share the bathroom)

Were you made to feel comfortable? I was treated very well by everyone we came into contact with

How were visiting hours handled? I think that because I had a baby in the NICU they nurses overlooked visiting hours completly...people were there all the time

Were you brought your baby right away? No...but only because he went to the NICU...MY DH and mother were able to see him within 45 min...which is reallly great time frame for a NICU baby...I had to wait until I could lift my butt off the bed...about 2 hrs later. Although I should mention that the NICU staff brought him over to me before they wheeled him out the the NICU.

Were the nurses helpful? Yes...I had one night that I sent DH home so he could finally get a good night sleep...and around 3am I feel apart and my nurse just came and sat with me.

ETC. my sister and I had great experiences at Stony Brook...but I think that on some level your Dr.'s influence over the staff can determine how much after care you receive. The Nurses respected my Dr. and we know that based on comments we over heard them making in the hall

Re: Post your hospital delivery/care experience

I delieved at Winthrop in Mineola.

How was your room?
- We had wanted at private room and had to wait a little because none were availbe when I delievered so they put me in a shared room. The rooms were pretty small I thought and you shared a bathroom. They did keep the rooms very clean. Once I switced I felt more comfortable. We had to pay for it and it was $220 a night and I was their for 2 nights.

Were you made to feel comfortable?
-I never felt uncomfortable at all from the time I arrived until the time I left.

How were visiting hours handled?
-The visiting hours are as follows: 10am to 10pm the daddy, from 2-4pm grandparents and sibblings of the infant, 6:30pm to 8:00pm for all other vistors. The baby is only out until 5pm and then they put them back into the nursey for general vistors. At first I was a little bothered by that when I heard that in lamaze. When he was actually here I was so glad because I didnt have so many people touching him. He was out when my parents came and then once every one of the vistors at night left then they brought the babies back.

Were you brought your baby right away?
-I had a short umbicale cord so he wasnt on my chest but they cleaned him up and showed him to me and then gave him to DH. Once the afterbirth was delivered and I was all cleaned up I held him. The L&D rooms their are huge and really nice I thought. I delieverd at 5:02am and they took him upstairs to the warms and to give him a bath at around 6:30am and then they brought him to me at 9:00am. The time in between went really fast because I fell asleep because I was pretty tired and the epi made me kind of out of it.

Were the nurses helpful?
- I didn't have a problem with any of the nurses but some were definity friendlier than othres. L&D nurses were great .

Re: Post your hospital delivery/care experience

Hospital: North Shore at Manhasset

How was your room? I shared a room with another mother...room was very clean..each room has their own bathroom, which you share.

Were you made to feel comfortable? I was treated very well by everyone..Anytime I needed anything, all I had to do was ask.

How were visiting hours handled? Visiting hours were in the evening...I dont remember the exact times...but they only let 3 people in the room. They all had to get passes from the main desk. Once a person returned a pass, another was allowed in.

Were you brought your baby right away? I ended up having a C section, so they let me see her once she was cleaned up, and then they gave her to daddy. While I was in recovery they brought her to the nursery, and then brought her back to me when I was in my room.

Were the nurses helpful? Always...they were always there when I needed them.

Were you made to feel comfortable?i was made extremly comfortable. the nurses were very attentive and would come and sit with us and give us some tips and free diapers and a whole bunch of extras to take home. and most of all as soon as i needed pain killers they were right there.

How were visiting hours handled?

Huntington Hospital

I was very lucky. I had my own room for 5 days. Not too many babies were born that week.
I was very comfortable and the nurses were great.
As far as visiting hours, immediate family came during the day and friends during the evening hours.
I had an emergency c-section and I didn't see my baby till the next morning but after that, the nurses brought the baby to me every day.
DH was with me from 10:00am-10:00pm every day but could not spend the night.
My experience at Huntington Hospital was an excellent one!

yes...but I think its because I had a C-Section, and a baby in the NICU...I think otherwise they may have asked him to leave...but I'm not really sure.

and to be honest after the 2nd night...I told him to go home...I wanted a good night sleep on my own.

Hospital: St Catherines

How was your room?I had my own room. This isnt usual but I guess since I delivered right after thanksgiving, the floor cleared out and I didnt have too many other preggos on the maternity ward.

Were you made to feel comfortable?I was treated very well. There were some nurses that went far beyond their job duties and others that were just average but they were all fine.

How were visiting hours handled? They were a little strict I felt towards guests staying a second over the time. Especially since I had my own room, I didnt see what was the big deal but rules are rules I guess.

Were you brought your baby right away? Yes definitely, they held her up and she bled on my face...UGHHHH!

Were the nurses helpful? My main delivery nurse was named Marilyn and she was excellent!

Hope this info helps!

Re: New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience

I delivered at Winthrop

How was your room? I could have had a private room, but I liked the idea of having a roommate - and I actually have kept in touch with the woman who I shared the room with. The New Life Center is great !

Were you made to feel comfortable?
Yes

How were visiting hours handled?
I think DH was allowede to stay between 9am-10pm, My parents and ILs 2-4pm and everyone was allowed between 6:30-8pm

Were you brought your baby right away?
Yes he got to stay with me for about an hour before he was taken to the nursery.

Were the nurses helpful?
Yes and no. There was one nurse I was stuck dealing with that was very insensitive and had no patience. The three others I dealt with made up for it and were such a help.

Huntington Hospital

How was your room? Room was fine, I didn't get a private room so there was no shower (shower was right outside in the hallway), but I didn't have a roommate for 2 days that I was there so it was OK

Were you made to feel comfortable? Yes, I had everything I wanted/needed

How were visiting hours handled? baby is in the room during the day for visitors, but kids can only visit at night when babies are in the nursery - they were pretty flexible with visiting hours too and DH wasn't really restricted at all

Were you brought your baby right away? I held him briefly in recovery, then was in recovery for about an hour while they cleaned him up and took all his tests, etc. and it so hapened that by then it was visiting hours so they couldn't bring him to me in my room until they were over

Were the nurses helpful? yes, they were all really great, helpful, and patient - I thought it would bother me to have them help me to the bathroom and change all the bloody pads/sheets, etc., but they made me feel comfortable

ETC.

Thanks so much.

My answers are above within the "quote" in italics - sorry I am not more computer savvy. Overall I had a great experience. FM me with any specific questions.

Winthrop

The room I got was small but adequate. I had one of the smaller rooms in the maternity area, but it was only a pain when i had a lot of visitors.

I was made to feel very comfortable. Nurses came in and gave me my pain medicine when i asked for it and the assitants did a great job of cleaning you up while not embarrassing you.

Visiting hours are 10AM-10PM for husbands, 2-4 PM for Grandparents and I think it was like 7-9 for everyone else (and you babies are put in the nursery during the 7-9 hours). I had my sisters and cousins come up at the 2-4 visiting so they could hold the baby and no one said anything to us. DH was not allowed to stay overnight.

I was in recovery for 6 hours (because i had twins and a csection) so i did not get to see my babies till after that.

I loved, loved, loved the nurses at Winthrop...they were amazing.

Re: New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience

Stony Brook - but I work there (not in Ob or peds) so I am biased. My experience was better than I could have expected.

How was your room? Could you get a private room?
All are private, shared BR

Were you made to feel comfortable?
Absolutely

How were visiting hours handled?
2-8 or 9pm but I have friends who work there so it was 24/7

Were you brought your baby right away?
Yes, and he stayed for 1-2 hours after that
The babies also room in with you which I thought was key for us. They take the baby for blood tests and morning rounds which is less than 1 hour a day - you can leave the baby in the nursery if you choose to as well.

Were the nurses helpful?
Very - with my personal care (which made me so much more comfortable) and baby's - the nursery doesn't have all the babies in b/c of rooming in so when I had a Q I just went there first and they were more than willing to help. There's also a newborn channel and a discharge class to help.

I posted details in an old post

Re: New MOMMIES Post your hospital delivery/care experience

Huntington Hospital

I had such an excellent experience there!

-You can get a private room, if available for an extra $250 per night.
I had a c-section and was in maternity for 4 days. I was in a semi-private room, but had no roommate the entire time I was there. Bathroom was in the room, no shower though. On the last night, they had to change my room and they put me in a private room at no charge.

-I was made to feel so comfortable by everyone that I came in contact with. I wasnt planning on a c-section, it happened at the last minute, and EVERYONE was so helpful in explaining exactly what was going to happen and made me feel as comfortable as possible. The staff at Huntington was outstanding.

-Visting hours were fine, they let DH stay with me in L&D on night of induction as long as he wanted.
In maternity, they let my parents and DH visit any time they wanted to, as well as relatives. They were a little more strict at night when the baby's were on view in the nursery.

-I believe I was brought my baby as soon as I came out of recovery and got myself settled and they had her fully checked out to make sure she was okay.

-The nurses were all extermely helpful.

How were visiting hours handled?

I was also at Stony Brook and had a very good experience. My post-partum room was small, but it was private, so no complaints from me. I thought the nurses were excellent at providing support for breastfeeding. They gave me lots of great tips.

Just have to say, my L&D nurse was fabulous, too!
