Has anyone cruised over to Parenting?
Seriously..why do we have this discussion every time it snows? I do not think 4 inches warrants a closing, but today's conditions did...if I think 4 inches is too much for ME, I will call out...
..as if NYC teachers are not pooped on enough lately, legislation on where we can live?! Seriously?! Relegate me to a cardboard box because the kids who live around the corner don't get snow days? Come on! I know I made a choice in where I live and what I do for work and I own up to it...don't tell me I can't choose where I own a home..you are not paying me THAT much!

Re: Has anyone cruised over to Parenting?
That would be crazy! They would not get enough qualified teachers and they would have to increase the salary.
It seems like an insane propostion for the 9 snow days that NYC has had since the 70's!
Why don't they just make us sleep in out classrooms. It will be like college...we are only allowed home for breaks and the summer!

Re: Has anyone cruised over to Parenting?
With the number of serious issues facing NYC Parents (overcrowding, community schools closing, charter schools popping up everywhere and taking over space from other schools, ending after school and enrichment programs), I don't understand how this is even an area of concern.
As if the attrition rates for teachers aren't high enough in NYC, it's insane to think anyone would want to place another obstacle in the way of recruiting and retaining teachers.

Re: Has anyone cruised over to Parenting?
I agree with you guys...I mean, honestly..I really don't complain if I make a decision to take a day..do I think there are times people are endangered? Yes, but they make a choice, whatever their motivation, as well...I don't discount their motivation and I would rather I not get flack for mine..
Additionally, I have worked snow days and seen that the kids who live closest do not come and it is not a regular instructional day..it's not all on the teachers, it's the parents who do not send their children, as well...don't try and say you expect normal activities to resume when you have 5 out of 25 students..then you'd complain your child missed it..right?

Re: Has anyone cruised over to Parenting?
I have to say, I read ALL the major NYC ed blogs- including Gotham Schools, which collects stuff from all the dailies- and NYC Public School Parents- and I have NEVER NEVER NEVER heard a whisper about residency requirements. Ending LIFO? Yes. Ending tenure? Yes. Evals and test scores? Yes. Layoffs? Yes/=.
The commenters at the WSJ seem to love talking about res requirements, but most of them seem only a hair above NY Post commenters in intelligence So I don't take them seriously.
Anyway, they would have to grandfather in those of us who are already working in the system. And in spite of the fact that there are lots of teachers looking for work, a good number of them will not consider NYC. Otherwise, the city would not have needed the millions they got last year to hire the New Teacher Project for recruitment.
Regardless, next year will be my last. I really can't wait.

Re: Has anyone cruised over to Parenting?
I think that whole thread is just
Anyone who doesn't work in the school system clearly doesn't understand that on days like these (when the schools remain open) we ARE babysitters! Of course I do my job even on snowy days- which is why regardless of the day, I always have something planned. Umm- that is if I bother to wear my cape and show up when the roads are really bad .. because I ::GASP:: live almost 2 hrs away from my nyc public school position!

Re: Has anyone cruised over to Parenting?
There are so many things I want to say but I bite my tongue bc I do not really want to debate with someone who has not a clue what it is to work in a school --nevermind on a snow day.
Puhlease...if I ever started talking about THEIR job or putting my nose in something I know NOTHING about they would flip
