Subbing
Am I the only sub finding it hard to get work these days?
Are there just so many subs? Teachers not taking time off? No new training? I'm only working like 1 day a week and I have applied for subbing in dozens of other districts and they don't even call me back. What gives?

Re: Subbing
I am with you.
I was lucky to get into one district and then into the other that I finished my leave replacement at.
I applied to a bunch of districts for subbing and never heard a thing.

Re: Subbing
I think you need to get ""in" with the secretaries and teachers in the building. In my building we have the "good subs" that we all always request, text, call, etc on our own if we are going to be on and then go on aesop at the same time, or just ask te secretaries to put it in for us. I have my two favorite subs in my phone for emergencies.
There are 3 or 4 subs that I pretty much see pretty much 4/5 times a week and then on really off days (like grading state exams) a bunch of random ones.

Re: Subbing
I'm on two lists and get only 1-2 days/week. One district has AESOP and I once had a job grabbed out from under me before I had a chance to click accept. It's tough.

Re: Subbing
My school doesn't really hire subs. Because of budget issues, they have teachers do coverages all day long when a teacher is out, OR they split the kids up and put them in different classes. They do have subs, but only permanent ones that are there everyday to fill in where needed.... not per diem ones.

Wow! That's crazy!
I just want my 540 so I can go get a job and make money.

Re: Subbing
I'm in Westchester but we've been having trouble getting subs to the point where they are splitting classes for the day and they have never done that before. When I have been sick, the principal has told me to make sure to put it in early so they can try to get a sub.

Re: Subbing
Everyone is right. You do have to "get in" with the secretaries. That is how I got in my district. Talked with them every time I went in until they knew me by name. Then they started requesting me, then when the time came for an opening, they remembered me.
We also have permanent subs for each building. So we never see per diem subs unless the entire grade level goes to a training or something like that.
Good Luck!!

Re: Subbing
I think it depends on the district. My district uses AESOP. The subs will be on the computer or phone all the time picking up jobs. We have quite a few subs that are there everyday. We always need good subs!

Re: Subbing
I'm on Aesop, the secretaries and even some teachers call me personally as well but it's still hard to get more than a day or 2 a week.

Are you on AESOP for multiple schools/districts? Also, do you watch it often for job postings?

I was in 3 districts but when I had back to back long term leave replacements in one district the other 2 removed me from their lists. I've been reapplying and trying to get back on.
I am obsessed with checking for jobs. If I am home, I check about 10x an hour.

That is odd! Maybe there aren't a lot of teachers in those districts. My HS has 150 teachers and there are lots of sub around!
