I'm suspicious. He is pulling out all the stops to end seniority and he has stated that laying off senior teachers will minimize layoffs (if you lay off someone making $90k, you can keep two newbies, so fewer people need to be laid off.)

I get so sick of hearing about all his "plans." I'll believe it when I see it. Every year it's always a doomsday prediction.

He said the same thing lastyear. It will not happen. Our Union will NEVER give in to last one in first one out EVER.

And ultimately Bloomberg won't layoff. IF he does it will be a lot of people with a cple yrs. And I dont think he will do that either.

me too Chat Icon

I spent the last 2 yrs in fear that he would layoff and he did not . Not one person. He is just bullying and intimidating in and an attempt to get what he wants from our union .

The law will have to be changed in order for seniority to be overturned. (After a teacher-blogger pointed out that "last-in, first-out" is for inventory, not people, I vowed to stop using it. Chat Icon )

The UFT has no role in the decision making process here- it's all in the NYS Senate and Assembly. Bills have been sitting there regarding seniority since last spring.

Bloomberg, being Bloomberg, will attempt to buy his way, I think. Cuomo is not very labor-friendly, for a Democrat, and took lots of money from pro-charter, anti-union hedge funders. Unfortunately, he owes them.

I hope Mulgrew stands his ground. IMO this is a strikeable issue.

As for these numbers- 15,000-21,000. That's nearly 1/4 of the teaching force. I'm calling BS on Bloomberg. He could have allowed teachers to take the retirement incentive. He wants this fight. The money to avoid layoffs is there- how many jobs could have been saved if the city wasn't giving The New Teacher Project $24 million to recruit? Chat Icon

If you are on FB, this page has pretty good up-to-date info.

And Bloomberg is also trying to kiss Cuomo's a$$ right now.
