Re: anyone have experience with thyroid cancer?

a very close friend of mine just went through this... from what i've learned, it's one of the most treatable kinds of cancer someone can get... she had both lymph nodes removed and had to eat a special iodine-free diet for a couple of weeks and then had to take some kind of radiation pill that killed any remaining cancer cells... she's 100% cancer free now... I also know someone else who had it and went through the exact same process and then was also totally fine afterwards.... hope this helps Chat Icon

While cancer is always scary, I was told that if you're ever going to get cancer, that thyroid cancer is the best to have.

I was told it is generally very slow-moving, and highly treatable.

Typically they will remove your entire thyroid, and then you will take a pill of radioactive iodine, which assures all cancer cells are gone. You may be in isolation for a period of time after (can't be around kids or pregnant women, etc)

Then, you later will have blood work done to check your hormone levels....typically people need to be put on a synthetic hormone (taken via pill form) for the rest of their lives.

Re: anyone have experience with thyroid cancer?

My father has had throid issues for years and the Dr told him he needed to out and that is likely cancer. My sister and I researched it like crazy and while he did have it out it was thank god not cancer. We did find out that it is one of the most curable cancers out there. I guess you would say the cancer you'd want to have if you had to have one.

Since he has no thyroid or para-thyroid he has to have his calcium levels checked and monitors his meds periodically but other than that he's great.

Good luck with everything.

Re: anyone have experience with thyroid cancer?

My Sister and good friends have had thyroid cancer. Friends had half thyroid removed, sister had entire thyroid removed and took a radioactive pill to kill remaining cells. All have hashimoto's.

Re: anyone have experience with thyroid cancer?

I had papillary thyroid cancer 9 years ago. They removed my entire thyroid and I had a radioactive iodine treatment to blast out any remaining cancer cells. That was followed up by full body scans every year for 5 years. Now I have a sonogram every 6 months just to make sure there's no regrowth.

If you have any questions, let me know.

Re: anyone have experience with thyroid cancer?

My DH's aunt had thyroid cancer. She had it removed and has been fine ever since. I don't believe she had to undergo any chemo or any other treatments.

She just has to take synthroid (?) to give her what her thyroid should have been.

I'm not aware of any issues that she had before having it removed.

Do all that have their entire thyroid removed have to take this pill?

how long is isolation?

my husband is having part of his thyroid removed on monday at SK, unless when they are inside they see that the right side has been compromised.
